The course on inclusivity in education emphasized the importance of creating equitable learning environments where every child, regardless of their background or needs, has access to meaningful education. While the course primarily focuses on older children, the principles discussed are broadly applicable across age groups. At the heart of inclusive education is the Islamic value of Sahan (compassion), which calls for fairness, understanding, and kindness toward all learners.

Designing and developing a fair and inclusive curriculum involves recognizing and addressing diverse cultural, linguistic, and individual needs. It requires educators to consider the challenges faced by children from varied nationalities, cultural backgrounds, and identities, especially those with additional language needs where the language of instruction is not their first language. For children encountering unfamiliar contexts or experiencing disabilities such as hearing loss, cognitive delays, or medical conditions like asthma, epilepsy, or muscular dystrophy, thoughtful accommodations are essential. Mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, OCD, or post-traumatic stress, as well as learning differences like processing delays and mathematical anxiety, must also be addressed through tailored support and interventions.

One critical exercise in the course was developing an inclusive lesson plan. This involved identifying specific learning needs and planning teaching strategies that cater to all learners. For example, incorporating cooperative learning strategies encourages students to work together, fostering a sense of belonging and teamwork. Cooperative learning not only enhances engagement but also helps students find purpose and meaning in their school activities, supporting their overall well-being. A school environment that prioritizes well-being—through positive experiences, emotional regulation, and opportunities for growth—has a profound impact on a child’s resilience, self-esteem, and ability to thrive.

Belonging is a key factor in promoting happiness and engagement in education. A welcoming environment where students feel valued and supported encourages psychological functioning and fosters emotional stability. Techniques such as Socratic questioning—asking questions for clarification, exploring points of view, and prompting reasoning—help students think deeply and develop critical reflection skills. Teaching reflection is vital for cultivating a growth mindset and empowering children to find meaning and purpose in their learning journeys.

Overall, the course reinforced that schools should allocate time and resources to prioritize well-being and inclusivity. By doing so, they create environments where all students can thrive, regardless of their challenges, and equip them with the tools needed for a fulfilling educational experience.
