<title>ESL programs offer students the chance to learn English or improve their English language skills. In an ESL classroom, the teacher only speaks English and is not required to speak the native language of any members of the class. In ESL classes in elementary school, non English speaking students are generally taken out of their regular classroom for a period of time to learn English. In middle and high school, students take an ESL class in place of an elective.</title>

<title>There are two ESL program methods: Content-Based ESL and Pull-Out ESL</title>

<title>Content-Based ESL aligns to what the name implies. It means that an English learner receives all content-area instruction including English language arts and reading (ELAR), math, science, and social studies, from an ESL-Certified teacher or teachers. Thus, targeted support by appropriately trained staff is initially embedded throughout all content areas. </title>

<title>Pull-Out ESL is not exactly how it sounds. For this model, the basic teacher certification requirement comes down to an English learner receiving at least their ELAR instruction by and ESL-certified teacher or teachers. The requirement can be fulfilled in 3 ways- the English learner&#39;s ELAR classroom teacher is ESL certified, an ESL certified teacher co-teaches with the English learner&#39;s ELAR teacher, or supplemental ELAR instruction is provided through an additional class or time period by an ESL and ELAR certified teacher. </title>
