I like the idea of <10% of the grade being for homework/reading logs/participation/etc. It could be a good compromise.

The concept of falsifying the grade seems very accurate, rather sobering. I agree that they should be separated. However, as a poor test taker myself, it is helpful to have other assignments that count.

What kind of assessment is fair for all kids then if their grade is only based on that. Do you assess each students mastery of the standards differently?

Homework = Practice that is working towards mastery.
Scoring of homework should not be a large enough percentage that it affects a Ss academic grade.

Interesting: agree that homework should be negligible in terms of grade. Like the title "practice". "Unethical" is a big flag. Are we willing to talk about that

As a parent, I want to know where my child is academically and behaviorally. As a teacher, I want my parents to know where their child is academically and behaviorally. One letter does not accomplish that!

When we went to 80% summative assessments and 20% all other for some math classes, we had concerns expressed by parents. So, this would be an education opportunity for parents as well.

Is it ok for a student to fail on a homework assignment without it killing their grade....FAIL "First Attempt In Learning"

It is just practice!!!!! It is just a mode to get them to the goal.

Sometimes I think teachers think they should give homework. The homework may be mundane - kids don't do it and we punish them. Incorporate our 5 C's in the solution.

Taking "Homework" away from teachers in gradebook will be a huge bridge to cross, but it's what is best for students.

I agree that counting homework and assessment separately helps promote the accuracy of the grade. However, a student who struggles with test-taking might benefit greatly from being able to count other assignments toward their final grade in a "weightier" measure.
