A monsoon is a change in the prevailing winds of a region. They are the main cause of wet and dry seasons and are most common throughout the Indian Ocean. Monsoons in Southeast Asia are broken into 2 categories, summer and winter.

Summer monsoon brings heavy rainfall between the months of April and September to many Asian countries that rely on this season for agriculture success. Weather patterns often occur from the southwest.

Winter monsoon runs from approximately October to April. Winds come predominately from the northeast. It is less known because of the lack of charismatic frequent weather changes, compared to Summer monsoon, which greatly defines most of what the tropics is known for, hot, humid weather.

Air over warm oceans in parts of the world such as the Indian Ocean collects moisture extremely fast. The moisture dense air creates clouds quickly which move inland due to prevailing wind direction. The extreme moisture content falls on the land masses adjacent to the ocean in large amounts. The resulting high humidity and moisture breeds thunderstorms and extreme weather patterns.
