Email from Joia Mukherjee 2/21/22
Dear friends of the GHD program.

By now, you have likely heard the news of the untimely passing of our beloved friend, mentor, and transformative leader, Dr. Paul Farmer. It is impossible to enumerate the contributions that Paul made to medicine around the world, the number of lives he touched and the impact his tenacious belief that every person is deeply and unassailably human and deserves love, compassion and care. It is such a gaping loss in our firmament to have lost such an exceptional person.

To the students and alumni, know that the Masters program, while one of his uncountable achievements, was one of his proudest. Paul knew that your work, your commitment and your passion for justice would seed the world as his own work did. And like the trees he planted, would yet reforest the planet healing the scars of injustices from Myanmar to Navajo, from Columbia to Nigeria, Boston to Bejing. You brought great joy to Paul and held great promise.

We will let you know as further details are available. But I wanted to write this brief note to send deep gratitude to all of you, for amidst our sorrow, Paul’s legacy shines so brightly through you all.

Love and solidarity

Joia

Email from Dean George Q. Daley to HMS Community

Dear Members of the HMS Community:

I am heartbroken to share the news that Paul Farmer died early this morning in Rwanda, where he was working and teaching at the University of Global Health Equity, which he co-founded. Paul passed quietly in his sleep, pursuing to his last day his mission of bringing exceptional medical care to regions of the globe in greatest need. He was 62.

A compassionate physician and infectious disease specialist, a brilliant and influential medical anthropologist, and among the greatest humanitarians of our time—perhaps all time—Paul dedicated his life to improving human health and advocating for health equity and social justice on a global scale. I am particularly shaken by his passing because he was not only a consummate colleague and a beloved mentor, but a close friend. To me, Paul represented the heart and soul of Harvard Medical School.

Paul was the Kolokotrones University Professor and head of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine in the Blavatnik Institute at HMS, and chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He earned his MD and PhD from Harvard. He was co-founder and chief strategist of Partners In Health, an international nonprofit that since 1987 has provided direct health care services and undertaken research and advocacy activities on behalf of the sick and those living in poverty. Paul co-founded PIH while still a medical student here at HMS, which speaks to his drive and his spirit.

Our hearts go out to his wife, Didi Bertrand Farmer, their three children, and all who knew and loved him.

We are planning a community gathering via Zoom and will share the details as soon as they are confirmed. There are many in our community who will feel the burden of his loss. Please know that grief counselors are available through Harvard’s 24-hour, confidential Employee Assistance Program (EAP) at 877-EAP-HARV (877-327-4278). His life’s work and teaching have been an inspiration to countless colleagues and trainees who will carry on his legacy. In closing, I would like to share one of Paul’s poignant quotes that is meaningful to me and represents what Paul stood for and fought for:

“The essence of global health equity is the idea that something so precious as health might be viewed as a right.”

Sincerely,

George Q. Daley
Dean of the Faculty of Medicine
Harvard University

His words and actions amplify their voices of suffering and demonstrate against all odds that responding responsibly is both possible and necessary. In November 2003, at his simple home in Cange, Haiti, replete with lovingly tended garden and fishpond, he showed my Vietnamese colleagues and me that AIDS can and must be treated among the poorest. Whatever good I will have done will be because of Paul, because of the call he helped me to heed. Thank you, great teacher, dear friend.

Yesterday, the world woke up to the tragic news that a global health icon, an advocate of social justice, a teacher and mentor, my friend PAUL FARMER has left us for eternity! What a loss...I felt a deep void in my heart, one like never before.

It is not that common to have professors, mentors, and friends who shape our intellect, interest, and life in general. But Paul was a beautiful combination of every positive attribute of change. He lived his values and made many remarkable disciples in the process.
While our initial encounter was originally for academic purposes, I soon began to learn from his views and wealth of knowledge. I was particularly inspired by his values, actions, and way of life. He gave up his comfort, time, and resources to affor others, mostly the underprivileged a chance at living a worthy life. Paul was a global leader, an accomplished scholar, a medical expert, and a global health pioneer. But his humility remains unmatched. Some of us became too familiar with him that we sometimes took his personality for granted. He never took pride in his personal accomplishments. We are going to miss you so deeply my dear friend!
In your death, the world has lost an irreplaceable asset. But to most of us, you live on Paul. You carve your name on compassionate hearts, not tombstones. Through your life and work, a legacy was etched into the minds of many, and those stories, motivations, and inspirations will live on forever.

The last few days before his demise, Paul sent me a short message after reading about our latest work on community participation. I did not have the slightest imagination that those would be his last words to me.
To all of us who had the privilege of interacting with Paul, we are the reasons behind his unfading smiles. Paul is proud of us, he looks up to us to keep the torch burning. What he has built over the years is a movement, let's keep his legacy in our works and values.

Rest in power Dr. Paul Farmer, we love you!

I don’t believe in Paul's death. Pure souls never die. Those who dedicate their lives to the advancement of humanity never die. Paul’s loyalty to his convictions, to suffer with the sufferers, to share the smiles and tears, the dances and melancholy, and hopes and distresses of the greater humanity pushed outside the circle of power. The world has a most irrational, yet most powerful system of rule: people who can afford and access good care survive and flourish; people who cannot suffer and perish. Paul’s hard-earned experiences as a doctor, an anthropologist, and a global health leader, and his pure soul taught him stand by the powerless. This led him to advocate the path of a strong publicly funded health care system, and against a for-profit private take over. The anti-privatization argument draws from the experience of global health research that shows the for-profit approach has ruined the health care system in many countries including Haiti, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Russia, and India. It was his heart that guided him to translate his ideas into action, and proved that victories can be won against inequality, injustice, and atrocity, when fought with compassionate courage, and much required anger. Paul did fight. He did win. An angrily impatient Paul called for, and showed examples of, a wider collaboration to avert millions of preventable deaths and suffering caused by structural violence. He won this lesson us. With this lesson, he remains with us. The fire of humanity can never die.

Humanity has lost a hero. Paul Farmer was a man with a big vision for positive change. He was a selfless leader, a teacher, a mentor and an extraordinary person. He possessed a great capacity for healing, teaching, advocacy, social justice and so much more. He was a man who changed my life and the lives of many in this world. Paul Farmer was a man who made the impossible possible. He was a man who was revolutionizing how to save the lives of the poor and oppressed people across the globe. I love you, Dr. Paul. You have trained an army of social justice fighters. I will forever cherish the privilege I had to be mentored by you in our shared lifelong commitment to global health equity.

I met Paul just over 2 1/2-years ago in Dubai. It was the first meeting of the Lancet Commission on Reparations and Redistributive Justice. I’m a law professor and a lawyer by training. My work has been in climate justice and ushering in a new world while this current one convulses with the effects of environmental degradation and racial and social hierarchy. Paul understood that they had a long relationship and were, in innumerable ways, one and the same. At the seminar, I shared a graph of the year-over-year increases in temperature by month. I thought it looked like an EKG and would resonate in a room full of clinicians. He interrupted me and said, “We call it a malignant rhythm” – and that is what I’ve called it since, as it so aptly describes the deep disharmony we are all experiencing.

After two days he felt like family. Like this was one meeting of many lifetimes. He gifted me a copy of To Repair the World and signed it with the message: “With gratitude for your teaching – especially teaching clinicians! – and with high hopes of working together in Rwanda and beyond.” I’m now grieving the beyond and the work we were planning to do together, having collaborated and conspired since we met in Dubai.

I’m so grateful for all that has been shared. Thank you for unabashedly committing to love as deeply as he did. With love to all of you, Maxine Burkett

I love Paul Farmer. Not only because he was pretty cool, or because he trusted me, or because he was my teacher, but because he gave me great advice and he always listened.

Paul knew I would take a bullet for him, although how I could cover all 6 foot plus of him with my 5 foot self, would inevitably be questioned, he knew I would figure it out.

I liked feeding him, giving him a you better eat all the food on your plate look, adjust his tie too many times to count, or cleaning his glasses, he always let me take care of him.

I’m profoundly sad because I know I will never have another Paul in my life. I’m sure I’ll come across good people throughout the rest of my life, but I’ll never again have someone that looks at me, with the compassion Paul always had.

Paul gave me a job, to build UGHE-Haiti. And I will. And I will make sure it is the most beautiful campus in all of Haiti, with koi ponds, trees for shade, blooming flowers all year long, and covered walkways to protect you when there is a rainstorm.

I know Paul is with God, and having a good chat with Him no doubt. Paul will be with me, in the morning dew, in the afternoon sunshine, in the evening sunset.

Liz Campa MMSc 2020
