Technologies for Translation and Interpreting: Challenges and Latest Developments

 

The guest speakers of the seminar are leading lights from all over the world.  By way of example, this week (tomorrow) we have Dr Stephen Doherty from New South Wales University, Australia who will be presenting his pioneering work on using eye-tracking for interpreting  and also Prof Will Lewis (on Friday) from the University of Washington and Microsoft (USA) who was behind the Skype Translator programme. Last week we had an inspiring industrial talk by Dr Juanjo Arrevalillo (Hermes). Future leading lights and ‘big guns’ include Lynne Bowker (University of Ottawa, Canada), Jean Senellart (CEO, Systran), Jochen Hummel (CEO, Coreon – the one who developed Trados) and many, many others.  We are running this seminar for the students from the University of Wolverhampton but I am welcoming also all EM TTI students from partner universities and students from associated partners (up to 5 students per partner university please).

 B. ADDITIONAL CLASSES

 

 1. Additional Programming sessions for students and staff who would like to learn (more) programming.

 

2.Additional sessions on Machine Learning and Deep Learning. 

 

 3. Statistics. Students and staff need the basic of statistics and statistical concepts to run experiments

 

 4. LaTeX classes. Knowledge of LaTeX will be very useful especially for those who would like to pursue a successful academic career. Writing papers in LaTeX will benefit from more consistent and professional programming.

 

 5. Academic English classes.  Many staff and students (mainly non-native speakers of English) will acquire skills to write better quality academic papers

  

Classes 1, 2 and 3 above are additional to the modules which already run in Wolverhampton (e.g. Python, Machine/Deep Learning, Corpus Linguistics with R which covers some statistics). These are not official Wolverhampton modules and not substitute for the WLV modules, but additional teaching organised around the needs of our students. We would recommend that the students take the WLV modules and attend the additional classes to further enhance their knowledge. Classes 4 and 5 are meant to help motivated students in their academic career.

 

All additional classes will be all online and the Zoom platform will be used.

 

All seminars and additional classes are free for our students and partners as part of our service to our students, our partners and the research/professional community as a whole.

 

Marina Tonkopeeva (marinatonkopeeva@mail.ru), a Year 1 EM TTI student will be running a questionnaire to find out how many students are interested in these additional teaching opportunities.
