The primitive bivalve was almost certainly a detritivore (consumer of loose organic materials), and the they still pursue this mode of life today. Feasting mainly on plankton or algae.
Because of their proximity to shore and sometimes exposure to the air as tides go in and out, one of the biggest mussels predators are birds. Various species of gulls, ducks, geese and other aquatic birds are their main predators. Some birds will dive under the water to grab buried mussels and crack them open with their powerful beaks.

The native range of this species is eastern Asia (specifically, the Yangtze River valley), but it has been transported around the world and now has a global distribution (in appropriate habitats). Considering that the polyp stage of this animal adheres to objects such as submerged plants, it is easy to see how it could have been imported to Europe, North America, and elsewhere as a hidden passenger on ornamental aquatic plants such as Chinese water lilies and water hyacinths. The podocyst resting stage, like tiny seeds, may also be easily transported from place to place. This species may also have spread, in part, by being included in the water with stocked (moved) fish, or even on the feet of migrating birds, among other possible modes of transfer.

The medusae wave their tentacles slowly in the water. When a daphnia, copepod, or other tiny prey touches a tentacle, special stinging cells discharge to help subdue the prey. The tentacles draw the food into the jellyfish’s mouth. Any tiny animal is fair game, but zooplankton (microscopic animals that float in the water) are the staple.

It is a common weedy plant that spreads by prolifically producing seeds, and has become invasive in temperate world regions. It is a minor problem for most agricultural crops, since it is not a competitive species, being intolerant of shade from other plants and unable to survive tilling. It also hosts many insects, some of which can be harmful to other plants.
