Although this book is from the 1960's, I remember reading it as a child and I feel as though it is a prime example of racial stereotypes being portrayed in children's books. Throughout the book, black people are portrayed as unintelligent and far inferior to white people. In the era this book was written, this is how black individuals were primarily viewed.

- African-American individuals are portrayed with very "monkey-like" features- Overly large lips, eyes, ears & nose and they all seem to look alike. Their clothing is very raggedy and run down.

- They refer to the white men as "master" and they act as servants for them. Driving TinTin around, carrying him, cooking him dinner etc.

- They worship TinTin almost like he is a god. They definitely view him as a hero. Clearly TinTin and the other white men hold the power.

- Their use of words/ speech is very poor, they do not seem intelligent and do not speak english fluently.
