Throughout the book, black people are portrayed as unintelligent and far inferior to white people. In the era this book was written, this is how black individuals were primarily viewed. 

- African-American individuals are portrayed with very "monkey-like" features- Overly large lips, eyes, ears & nose and they all seem to look alike. Their clothing is very raggedy and run down.

- They refer to the white men as "master" and they act as servants for them. Driving TinTin around, carrying him, cooking him dinner etc. 

- They worship TinTin almost like he is a god. They definitely view him as a hero. Clearly TinTin and the other white men hold the power. 

- Their use of words/ speech is very poor, they do not seem intelligent and do not speak english fluently.
