In today’s society, virtual teams are becoming the norm.  In a macro environment, virtual teams are beneficial because  they allow from a number of individuals to collaborate in addressing and meeting client needs regardless of physical location. For example, large agencies in the macro social  work environment like a non-profit agency working with to fund services for many individuals in need can do so by connecting with the group of individuals through video or phone calls, emails, and other forms of technology to achieve a common goal. With virtual team work some more difficulties can arise due to the individuals not being in contact face- to face, for example lack of cohesion, isolation or relationship building struggles. Social workers understand that even they are not immune from being human and having human emotions. When social workers are predisposed to specific social dynamics or feelings, sometimes they hesitate to participate in teams.
Some dynamics that can impact team participation can vary but the main involved the following:
Professional differences; social workers can have different perspectives on what the course of action should be due to varying disciplines so that they may have differences of opinion on the next course of action.
Another barrier is professional boundaries; social workers that serve within teams may have the same expertise; however, overlapping or responsibilities can occur. Nevertheless, to better serve clients and benefit the team, recognizing, discussing, and clarifying those overlapping jobs what role who is taking should help.
Sometimes we are faced with helplessness in the face of authority, mainly in a setting dominated by other professions. This may ripple into the social worker not contributing, speaking up, or actively contributing to the team. However, developing and confidence in their knowledge and skills and contributing to the team can help with the goal.
Finally, the myth of good intentions; social workers sometimes believe that being cooperative and having good intentions are sufficient for the team. However, teamwork depends on personal characteristics and knowledge, so refining these skills are essential for effective collaboration.
Working effectively with groups or teams requires a degree of self-awareness a sense of one’s dignity.
