During WWI, farmers had to increase how many crops they harvested because of the growing population, so they bought more land and expensive tractors along with other farm equipment. After the war, the demand for the crops fell but the farmers continued to harvest and produce an abundant amount of crops which resulted in a surplus amount of crops and many debts that were unable to be paid off. There was a rural depression that forced the farmers to sell their goods because they didn't have enough money to buy new consumer goods produced by American industries.
