When talking about controversial topics in the classroom, I include this compass to help students to pause, self-assess, and identify the way they're approaching the issue and show them (anonymously) how others are approaching it. I like to explain that if student A is really in his feelings, and student B just wants to act, to DO something, they may not fully understand each other in this moment. And that's okay.

This book does an amazing job of looking at the brain washing that goes on in a white supremacy cult. It is a YA adult fiction book that follows the story of a boy who does get out. I have had a few 8th grade students who have read this and last year one of them told me this is the first book that has every made him angry. He never knew a book could do that. He has always felt neutral. He saw the main character trying to change and all the things that were working against him. It is a tough read, but shows the power of the white world and the damage they look to do.
