Syria has a semi-presidential government, which means that Syria has a republic type government with an exception. The exception being that a prime minister and a president run the government alongside each other. The president is Bashar al-Assad, he has been in office is 2000 after his father died of a heart attack. The prime minister is Imad Khamis. Khamis has been in office since 2016. Due to Syria´s government there has a civil war going on for the last 7 years. The people who are fighting are soldiers who support the president Assad, ¨rebels¨ who do not want Assad to have power, and a group called ¨Ïslamic State¨(ISIS). Everyone who is fighting is trying to obtain control of Syria. Supporters of Syria are Russia and Iran. Syria´s rebels re the US, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

Why is the US considered a rebel to Syria?

¨In the early stretches of the seven-year Syrian civil war, President Barack Obama proclaimed a clear mission: Syrian President Bashar Assad had to go. Assad didn´t. Then Obama dared Assad to cross a U.S. red line on the use of chemical weapons in the war. Assad did.¨ - Chicago Tribune. By the use of chemical weapons Assad has decided that he could survive the backlash of what the rest of the world would do. Assad´s theory of of survival was correct. The US now wants to punish the ruthless president for his crimes therefore elucidating the impression that the US is a threat from Syria´s point of view. Syria continues the war today.

Throughout the war Syria has committed many acts of extreme violence on its citizens. The acts include launching chemical weapon attacks on its citizens, abduction, and torture. ISIS has reportedly used citizens as human shields during wars. When citizens would be abducted they would be starved and tortured by officials. More than 400,000 citizens have died since 2011 from the war alone. Many of the citizens have have been moved throughout the war because fleeing is safer than staying at home. Five million citizens have become refugees abroad and over six million have been moved internally. An estimated 540,000 people we´re still living in war ridden areas.

Laws for women

There are harsh rules on clothing, work, and school. ¨The harsh rules that some groups are administering in areas under their control in northern and northeastern Syria violate women’s and girls’ human rights and limit their ability to carry out essential daily activities.¨- Human Rights Watch. ISIS has carried out harsh punishments if women go against any of the strict laws. One of the laws are that women must be covered from head to toe. The laws affect the women´s ability to obtain an education. If a women even leaves her house without the protection of a man her and if she is with children they can all be killed or abducted. Syria even has laws against women expressing themselves through speech, religion, and objections to laws.

Syria death statistics

How many people have died in Syria from the war? So far throughout 7 years over 400,000 people including 500 kids have died as victims of war. In 2017 10,204 people died. In 2018 only 6,395 people died as of October. The decrease of deaths shows improvement of Syria´s harsh punishment tactics. When and if the war does in the death rate should go down significantly. Most casualties in Syria are war related because citizens are killed in their own streets. Another reason for the many deaths are ISIS killing people for not following the rules and disrespecting their superiors.
