There is so much more to a person then the single story we are given about them. Another thing single stories do is create stereotypes, and this is unfair because stereotypes are incomplete. It is so easy to judge someone when you don’t know their full story. The former slaves gave their accounts of the obstacles they went through that were beyond their control. The detailed stories read in the film really brought to life what it would have been like being a slave in the south. Many of the stories talked about the difficult working conditions and overall poor quality of life which included abuse, rape, starvation, and the separation of families. We always learn about how cruel slavery was, but hearing these real stories from former slaves themselves made it that much more real. She tells the cruel reality of how slaves were treated from her own personal experiences. She gives countless stories of not only the physical beatings, but also the mental beatings the slaves endured. After seven years of being hidden in a small attic she finally escapes to freedom, however the road to get here there was unimaginable. Because Harriet so bravely told her story we are able to have a better understanding of what truly went on in the south. He shares the heartbreaking reality of how slaves were overworked, exhausted and went on with little to no food. If slaves disobeyed their owner in the slightest they were beaten and whipped. Douglas eventually learned the key to freedom was knowledge and education, which so many slaves were kept from. Douglas spent much of his time teaching slaves to read and write because he knew that was their key to freedom and success. This shows us we should never take our education for granted because so many people were held back from one. He gave the people closure of the sacrifices and losses that took place in the war. Lincoln also addresses the main issue that led to the war which was slavery. He announced it would end after the war. I think his words were powerful because it called for compassion and reconciliation which our nation was in desperate need of.
