In 2009 I moved from Washington all the way to Utah! My family had to make the move because of my father's job for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was a huge change for me as a 9 year old, I had to make a whole new group of friends, adjust to culture shock, and learn how to live in the Utah heat. I was born in Richland and lived there for the first 9 years of my life, then raised in Utah for the last 10 years. My family often asks me where I think I'm from. I reply with that I am a Washingtonian raised Utahn! I experienced a huge re-adjustment in culture in Utah, when I wanted to play with kids at recess I got asked if I was "Mormon" or not. When I replied yes, the other kids would play with me. Most of my friends in high school weren't members of my faith and I was one of their few religious classmates that they accepted kindly.

As I had mentioned in my moving to Utah, I experienced a huge culture shock. I had lived in a predominantly Christian community, but Utah was on a whole different level. I had never lived in a state where people were so open about their religion and their love for Jesus Christ. I was baptized and became a member of my faith when I was 8 years old. I have since then gone to church every Sunday and had multiple jobs within the church. Currently I teach music to young children with my mom.

The meme above is a reference from the Disney show, Phineas and Ferb!
My generation grew up with the internet and the advancement of technology. I have fuzzy memories of life without flip phones and huge DELL desktop computers. The most important things to me when I was a kid: Club Penguin, Disney Channel, and Barbie. Having these fond memories of childhood helps me connect with others. A year ago Club Penguin was rebooted and I was able to reconnect with my childhood nostalgia. These memories are important to me because I can remember that I had a good childhood, nothing was problematic or hurtful yet. Today most of my friends can relate to me when we chat about our old screen names and what our favorite Hannah Montana songs were.

In 2019 women are more powerful than ever! I have been doing a lot of reading for my American history class about the roles women played in the early days of America. Right now women play a huge role in trying to change the game, from telling others that it is okay to express yourself to encouraging one another to tell their stories. In my first semester at SLCC, I wrote an essay about the word feminism. I think feminism is a great concept - we fight for women's rights on the basis of equality of sexes. However, I think feminism is getting to be twisted now; it's become more of a weapon. It's important to be a woman in modern times, but it is also important to be kind and listen to what is available to you.

The image above was painted in February 2019 for my Art 1010 course.
I have grown up in a household where creativity is taken seriously. My mom studied art at BYU nearly 40 years ago and has worked on her skills since. Whenever my workload allows it, I tag along with her to her watercolor classes at Gardener's Village. I am not the best at watercolor, but it gives me an outlet to express my creativity. Normally I will paint something less complicated, like popsicles or flowers. Being able to paint and sketch is one of my favorite hobbies, I get to see the world differently in how I interpret it as a painting.
