Architects started to experiment with more complicated roofs, using gables and overhanging eaves. They also started to experiment with building in baked brick during the Han Dynasty – just about the same time as Roman architects were beginning to build in brick at the other end of Eurasia.

In the 200s BC, people in China learned about Buddhism, the new religion from India, and so they started to build Buddhist temples for the first time. These early Han Dynasty Buddhist temples look like Indian temples or stupas from the same time. They are wooden towers.

The emperor used many government officials organized in a bureaucracy to help him run the empire. The top officials lived in the capital to give the emperor advice while the lower officials lived throughout the empire and checked on things like roads, canals, and grain quotas. Officials ideally were chosen by ability and knowledge rather than social status and connections. They had to pass an intensive test on five Confucian classic texts. These civil servants were evaluated every three years and were either promoted or demoted.

The crossbow used during this period was more likely used in the large group of marksmen deployed to fire waves of bolts (crossbow ammunition) onto enemies from afar. The crossbow itself had a superior range than normal bows. Thus it became more commonly used for an artillery purpose than for sniping. Crossbows had been in use in China since the Zhou dynasty over 700 years earlier (approx. 500 BCE)

GUNPOWDER

For many centuries, initially the Chinese did not use gunpowder as a weapon. Around the time of the Three Kingdoms period (AD 220--280 years), people used the formula of gunpowder to make firecrackers for celebrating ceremonies.
