The main issue all children with autism may struggle with is socialization and interaction with peers. Many children with autism will begin displaying signs as early as 9 months old. Signs can include avoiding eye contact, no expression of emotions on their face, no interest in socializing with other children, does not play games, does not gesture (waving hello, hand signals learnt while singing songs, etc.), or does not participate in pretend play. They may flap their hands or rock their body, they may have obsessive tendencies and struggle with change, follow routines and even repeat phrases or sounds over and over again. There will be many delays in their neurological and, depending on how severe the disorder is, physical development. They may struggle with epilepsy, gastrointestinal issues, anxiety or a complete lack of fear, hyperactivity, or delayed verbal and motor developments. They may also have sensory issues and become overstimulated from environmental factors, leading to strong emotions.

While autism is not a curable disorder, people with it can find assistance to get through it. Children may be placed in special classrooms to better accommodate their needs. more rigid schedules that do not stray from the norm may help in their anxieties and obsessive tendencies. Allowing them more space in a smaller classroom where they may not be easily overwhelmed would also be beneficial. Some healthcare professionals may suggest involving the child's family in the process of learning social norms, independence away from them and teachers, and building on their strengths. More severe diagnoses may require medication to quell those more aggressive behaviors. If I had a student who was struggling with this in my room, I would make sure that 1. I always had a spot available for them to take a breather, 2. That I would have a consistent communication method with their parent/guardian, and 3. That I would praise their positive behaviors and try not to overwhelm them too much. Children with autism bring many strengths as long as they're taken in moderation. Their hyperactivity can bring energy to a room that may need it, their shortcomings can teach peers kindness and patience. Acceptance and understanding are one of the greatest strengths a person can have. Their need for structure can bring a hyperactive class back down to Earth.
