Jazz music has always been fairly popular and had a good following, Buddy Rich was a huge artist in the Jazz scene with his famous big brass band he played with. Born on September 30th 1917 and passing away April 2nd 1987 Buddy was rewound and still is among drummers and musicians alike as the worlds best ever drummer. 

This big band Jazz is fairly traditional it wouldn't be like jazz fusion which is more modern. the crowds and following buddy and his band has shows how popular Jazz was and still is today with huge jazz drum fests stilling being held all over the world.

Throughout these times Jazz would have been a popular genre of music as there wouldn't have been much variation as there is now during those times.

Socially
Jazz has brought people together as it tends to have a cult like following however, in the 40's and 50's when Jazz was more popular possibly the most popular genre alongside blues Jazz was a social status that brought people of all races together as it almost socially unifies people how share the a love for Jazz more so during these times.

In addition to this a modern day jazz drummer would include Dave weckl. Dave is another phenomenal drumming talent and has been one of the biggest names in Jazz drumming since he came about in the early 1980's in the New York Jazz scene.

The movements being that Jazz was a release for people especially the working class at the time when they had hard times going down to the local jazz club was a release for people like this back then. moreover Jazz also covered wealthier people in society quite well to do people frequently attending the various venues when live Jazz was played.
This then progressed for Buddy into playing swing Jazz where he played all over the world in various jazz clubs and bars such as Village Vanguard NY and Ronnie Scott's London. This being the main way especially during these times that Jazz was heard as Jazz always tended to be played in clubs, bars, halls and theaters rather than stadiums. 
This clubs would provide a places where people off the streets could learn and listen to Jazz and get influenced by these various musicians such as Buddy and his big band.
