The exhibition features a variety of artworks, including To Breathe – Zone of Nowhere (2018) an awe-inspiring installation of 30 large translucent flags created for PICA’s central gallery space. The work expresses a wish for coexistence, for a utopian society in which individuals unite in celebration of their distinctions and common humanity. It originates from the video To Breathe – The Flags (2012), commissioned for the London 2012 Summer Olympics.

- Born 1957, Daegu, Korea
- Lives and works in New York and Seoul.
- She earned a BFA (1980) and MA (1984) from Hong-Ik University, Seoul.

Kimsooja became attuned to issues of migration and displacement early in life. Her father served in the military, so the family moved frequently.

After earning both her BFA and MFA in painting at Hong-Ik University in Seoul in 1980 and 1984 respectively, the artist began developing large textile collages. Kimsooja’s work evolved into three dimensions, exemplified by her installations of cloth bundles, called "bottari". Since the late 1990s, Kimsooja has interpreted themes of migration and social connection through meditative performances and videos, as well as large-scale, interactive installations.

Kimsooja’s videos and installations blur the boundaries between aesthetics and transcendent experience through their use of repetitive actions, meditative practices, and serial forms. In many pieces, everyday actions—such as sewing or doing laundry—become two- and three-dimensional or performative activities. Central to her work is the “bottari,” a traditional Korean bed cover used to wrap and protect personal belongings, which Kimsooja transforms into a philosophical metaphor for structure and connection.
