Your goal is to build Santa's sleigh with ONLY the materials you are given in the group you are assigned. You don't have to use all the materials, but you will not be given anything additional. Each group will receive 20 Popsicle sticks, 1 piece of construction paper, 5 index cards, 5 pipe cleaners, 2 straws, 4 marbles, 2 yards of masking tape, and a pair of scissors. You will have exactly 40 minutes to build and may refer to the timer on the board at any time.

At the end of class, we will race our sleighs. The winning group will be the group whose sleigh travels the farthest distance. To qualify for the race, your sleigh will need to pass a quality assurance test in which it holds a bottle of hand sanitizer.

Objective: Build the ship that can hold the most marbles before sinking. You will have 35 minutes from the time you get to your seat.

Rather than being given a set of materials, your team will shop for the materials you think are the best fit for this maker project. You have a budget of $6.00 and should complete the planning sheet provided to purchase materials when you are ready. This means your team will need to do some planning ahead to be successful.

Additionally, your team will have assigned roles. Although everyone should be involved in the process the entire time, you will each get an opportunity to lead some aspect of your project. Aside from the project manager, the roles are decided on by your team.

Project Manager: Reads instructions to the group and makes sure those instructions are followed throughout, writes roles down on planning sheet and keeps everyone on task

Accountant: Completes the shopping list and budget portion of the planning sheet and purchases materials once the ENTIRE planning sheet has been completed

Architect: Draws the blueprint design on the planning sheet, showing how your team will use their materials

Laborer: Follows the blueprint to physically build the design

Surveyor (only groups of 5 will have a surveyor): Tests the final design with marbles. In groups of 4, the project manager will complete this job.

You will not be able to test your design throughout the process for this maker space. Therefore, you should stay in your assigned area for the entire duration of our maker space project unless you are purchasing materials.

Maker Day: Marble Roller Coasters

Objective: Build a marble roller coaster in which your marble travels the slowest from the beginning (when we let go of the marble) to the end (when the marble hits the floor). Your roller coaster will be automatically disqualified if your marble does not make it all the way through. You will have 55 minutes to construct.

*Problem solving through cycles of design, implementation, and reflection.
*Working productively with others to problem solve by soliciting and responding to feedback and involving diverse perspectives in their inquiry process.

Your team will receive a planning sheet in which you must choose and budget for your materials. These are the only building materials you are permitted to use. Materials available include paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, masking tape by the yard, and scissors. Each team begins with foam board to construct against. You will also receive a marble with your materials. This is for the purpose of testing your design, so that you may make adjustments as needed.

Your planning sheet requires a blueprint. Your accountant will not be able to purchase any materials until the entire planning sheet is complete.

At the end of 55 minutes, marble roller coasters will compete to see which marble takes the LONGEST time to get through the roller coaster.

Your team will have assigned roles. Although everyone should be involved in the process the entire time, you will each get an opportunity to lead some aspect of your project.
