Islam is a monotheistic religion. One of the Five Pillars of Faith is that there is only one universal god; Allah. Muhammad believed that he was God's final messenger. Muslims, Jews and Christians all worship the same god, but Muslims call him Allah. Allah means "The God" in Arabic.

After years of promoting his ideas, Muhammad became so disliked that people began plotting his murder. In A.D. 622, fearing for his life, Muhammad went to the town of Medina. This flight from Mecca to Medina became known as the Hegira or Hijra, Arabic for "flight.” In Medina, the local people welcomed Muhammad. There, Muhammad built the first Islamic temple to separate Islam from Judaism and Christianity.
