The figure seems in some ways stronger than what appears to be supporting her. 
A personal connection I feel with this piece is technical, I suppose, I love drawing as a medium and I love the way this drawing is rendered. How do I know that she is strong? The Artist Charles White engrains her face with an intense gaze that is as hard and strong as the boulder behind her. The title suggest that she is a general leading her people out of bondage as Moses lead his people out of bondage. The tonal values of the woman blends with the rocks suggesting that there is a relationship between the two. The shape of Tubmans hat is similar to that of a General Washington hat although this is a different period in history.

The figure is sitting on rocks that surround her. She is almost challenging the viewer with her gaze. The colors, texture, rocks, the look on her face... even if you didn't know who this was or what the title was.. the viewer can see it has a deep powerful meaning behind it. She looks tired. 
Strong- but tired. 

The texture and the lines make me very curious what techniques or materials were used. - discuss the style of the work. How would you describe this to someone who can't see it? What is unusual about it? I would describe it as stark and bold, a commanding woman with a hardness sits upon a boulder that surrounds and comes up just a bit above her own seated height.

Being a teacher makes me feel like a general sometimes and I like to think that I am leading students in battle and preparing them for future struggles in life.

This work is an observational drawing, probably from a few different references. Tubman is depicted in black and white and is in a serious pose. She is gazing at the viewer while sitting on a series of large rocks. This piece was probably made in graphite pencil or charcoal on paper. It seems that the artist is asking us to draw a connection with the symbolism of Moses who was a leader chosen to free the jews from suffering. Similarly, Tubman was a leader that helped free other blacks.
I think that White used charcoal or possibly ink  and some kind of ruler or straight edge to create marks and capture texture.

Sitting on my throne of a coffee mug (which never holds enough), I'm navigating (and helping others navigate) different parts of my life- teaching, my marriage, myself, and my 9 month old son. It's tiring. I also thought of a portrait of someone else who is admired for their strength. But I ended up choosing a time (first backpacking trip) when I felt strong and accomplished. I didn’t have time to do a detailed texture drawing so I kept it simple with a silhouette.  Its somewhat elementary but I would make it more advanced if it was an actual sample.
