Fire that occurred in Town N between 2 and 6 September 1812 during the occupation of the city by French troops. The fire engulfed almost all A and B of the city, as well as significant areas on the outskirts of the city, destroying three quarters of the wooden buildings. Experts are considering several main versions of the September events. According to the official version of the tsarist government, the fire was caused by the actions of the occupiers. Some historians believe that the order to set fire to the abandoned city could have been given by the mayor Fyodor Rostopchin. The fire of 1812 was one of the largest urban fires in Country M in the 19th century.
