Picture 1
I found it interesting how you turned your clothes into a metaphor. I agree that how we look/wear and feel about ourselves does define our identity. Also, clothes are a way to remember important events in the past. I still have some shirts from events that I don't wear, but still keep because of the memory associated with them. I am glad that you brought up valuing diversity through clothes because clothes are usually the first thing that people notice about others.

Picture 2
Passports are a defining symbol of citizenship. I liked how you brought up responsibility as a citizen. There are many aspects that make you one, but there are also many responsibilities that come with it. Passports also do mean different things to different people. For me, a passport is a form of ID or an opportunity to travel, but for my relatives that are new Canadians, it is a symbol of acceptance and opportunity.

Picture 3
Parliament buildings are very important for the Canadian government. Seeing them in real life is surreal as they are so important. The light show sounds like it was an amazing experience and provided everyone the opportunity to connect with pride with strangers. I wonder if there is a video of it online that could be used in class.

Picture 4
Your life experiences shape your identity and photo albums provide a story of that identity developing. I think that photos are some people's prized possessions because of their deep meaning and importance to their lives.

Picture 1 – A closet is a very intimate place full of memories and keepsakes; memories are very important to an individual’s identity. The expression of self through one’s appearance is an important aspect of many people as it is often the initial impression of someone’s identity. A wardrobe is physical expression of an individual’s identity.

Practice 2 – These paper documents prove an individual as a lawful, natural-born citizen of Canada. Being a citizen gives people the access to many rights and services. I think that exploring the process of becoming a citizen and examining the discrepancies that are still prevalent in Canadian society today.

Picture 3 – I think that this is a fantastic picture. Creating a sense of community through examining Canada’s history; seeing the different cultures that collaborated to create the country. I think that displays of Canada, are few and far between (since the Winter Olympics only happen every four years), but absolutely that giving people the opportunity to feel patriotic and pride in their country is important to building community and meaningful citizenship.

Picture 4 – Photographs are so important to a person’s identity; it is often what people consider most important to save in natural disasters or fire. The memories are so important to a person’s identity. I think that being “rooted” and having a picture to remember where you came and of memories you shared with loved ones. I really appreciated how you spoke about visual literacy and understanding the differences between oral and written traditions.
