At first, the narrator is minding his business, when he is greeted by strange occurrences like his door being repeatedly knocked on while nobody being present at the door. A raven then flies into view, and he is very anxious of it. He asks it questions, and the raven replies with actual answers in the English language. These early occurrences are already shown to be unnatural. The narrator then starts to suspect the raven of being sent by the devil, alluding to more supernatural bodies and events. The narrator then thinks about his deceased wife and the possibilities of her being in heaven, which is more supernatural subjects. Every main event in the poem has been beyond the laws of nature, meaning they have been supernatural.
