I agree with Austin-the setting is significant. It starts with a very common neighborhood sets the scene: familiar ice cream man, street sign, neat front yards and neighbors outside enjoying a summer afternoon. Then, almost immediately, Serling narrates that, "the monsters are coming." That's definitely foreshadowing and juxtaposing (fancy word for creating a strong contrast) between the "normal" neighborhood and a very "unnatural" invasion of monsters. In the end, there's yet another contrast: the monsters? They're us. :O

When he tries to convey that Mr. Goodman is the real alien, it gives you a feeling of discomfort knowing who the alien really is, and it makes the ending where you realize no one is alien seem even more frightening. The author also uses the concept of betrayal. When everyone turns on Tommy, you realize that no one can be trusted, and if anyone was to make false accusations about you, you would be betrayed. This creates tension knowing that anybody could have turned on you if you where in this situation.

I think that Ron Serling was quite good at creating suspense . He knew how to use foreshadowing, red herrings, and cliffhangers very effectively. He used the foreshadowing technique when he kept hinting that something very bad and scary might happen. In the end something actually did happen and this was when the monsters came. He also showed the technique of red herring. He used this when he kept dropping clues as to who was the monster. It actually turned out that none of these people were actually the monster it was the boy. This is a red herring because it's distracting us from the real person and it lead us to the wrong conclusion. He also used the last technique cliffhangers a lot. One very good example is when the narrator said, "When the monsters came..." This was an example of a cliffhanger because it left you wanting to know and read more. It left you asking yourself what is going to happen next and what will the characters do about it.
