My first impressions about Sustainability project

At first, I though this project is boring because the sustainability is far away from me. So i didn’t like the project. But during the reaching, I found some information and artworks from some articles like Nick who he used old things to created lots of portraits, it was interesting

About what i learn I consider that it was too short until now, so maybe sometimes later i can find some important to remember

But the sustainable in my own industry, I really sure that is not important for me. Maybe someone will disagree with me. However, the most crucial point is that I believe as an ordinary person, I merely utilized the resources that I should have used, without wasting anything and without causing any harm to the world or society. On the contrary, those who are extravagant and wasteful. For instance, the stadiums for the Qatar World Cup had huge air conditioners operating outdoors, and the electricity consumed in a single day was enough to power one person for a lifetime. Why should we, ordinary people, be responsible for changing the consequences of others' waste?

Then I think the project will be a challenging. Because I have never do the work like this. So I'm not very proficient at this kind of task.

what i’ll research?

i think i’ll still find some different articles and their works which can improve our Sustainable consciousness.

Chatting with AI about my major with Sustainability

Here are some ideas about sustainability in the game design major:

1. Environmental - themed Game Content

Virtual Ecosystem Simulation: Design games that simulate real - world ecosystems. For example, create a virtual forest where players need to manage resources like water, sunlight, and soil nutrients for the growth of plants and the survival of animals. Through gameplay, players can understand the interdependence of different species and the importance of maintaining ecological balance.

Resource Management Games: Develop games where players have to manage limited resources such as energy (e.g., solar, wind, fossil fuels), water, and raw materials. They could be tasked with building and operating a sustainable city, where decisions on resource extraction, usage, and recycling affect the city's long - term viability.

2. Incorporating Sustainable Development Messages

Narrative - driven Games: Use the game's story to convey messages about sustainability. For instance, in an adventure game, the protagonist could be on a quest to save a world facing environmental disasters caused by human - induced climate change. Along the way, players learn about the causes and solutions to such problems.

Educational Mini - games: Create short, educational mini - games within a larger game that teach players about specific sustainable development goals, like reducing plastic waste, conserving biodiversity, or promoting renewable energy.

3. Sustainable Game Development Practices

Energy - efficient Game Engines: When developing games, optimize the game engine to consume less energy during gameplay. This could involve using efficient algorithms for graphics rendering, reducing unnecessary background processes, and optimizing code to minimize power usage on gaming devices.

Recyclable and Reusable Assets: Design game assets (such as textures, models) in a way that they can be easily reused across different levels or games. Also, consider using "recycled" assets from open - source libraries or repurposing old assets instead of constantly creating new ones from scratch.

4. Community and Social Responsibility

Multiplayer Games for a Cause: Develop multiplayer games where players can work together towards a sustainable goal. For example, a cooperative game where players from around the world collaborate to clean up virtual polluted areas, and in real - life, the game developers donate a portion of the proceeds to environmental conservation organizations.

Inclusive Game Design: Ensure that the game is accessible to a wide range of players, regardless of their physical abilities or cultural backgrounds. This promotes social inclusivity, which is an important aspect of sustainable development. For example, design games with customizable controls for players with disabilities or incorporate diverse cultural elements to represent different communities.

Link to Class

GumDrop turns one - time - use gum into new stuff. It cuts waste and makes money, just like what we study in Sustainability class.

Related Subjects

It’s about making products and working with materials. Old gum becomes GUM - TEC®, then new things like shoes and cups.

The Problem

Gum litters cities. It’s hard to break down and costs a lot to clean. Throwing it away fills landfills and hurts nature.

The Fix

• Special bins catch 90% of dropped gum.

• Gum becomes GUM - TEC for new products.

• Working with brands and governments saves money and helps the environment.

This shows teamwork and new ideas can solve pollution problems.

Reflective Padlet Post – Life Cycle of a T-Shirt

Reflecting on the Life Cycle of a T - Shirt

After watching the video, I was deeply impressed. The main problem shown is that the entire process of T - shirt production and consumption causes huge environmental harm, which is closely related to the fashion industry. In production, cotton farming uses an astonishing amount of water, pesticides and synthetic dyes cause pollution, and the fast - fashion model leads to a lot of clothing being discarded quickly.

Proposed solutions include using sustainable materials like organic cotton and recycled fabrics, adopting more eco - friendly production methods, and promoting rational consumption. What surprised me most was that making one T - shirt requires thousands of liters of water, and so much clothing becomes waste soon.

As a consumer, I'll buy fewer T - shirts, choosing quality and classic styles. I plan to buy second - hand clothes, repair damaged items, support eco - friendly brands, and also spread the idea of sustainable consumption to those around me.

Introduction

The film industry is popular, but it harms the environment. Today, people want it to be greener. This essay will look at two examples. One is a big Hollywood movie, and the other is a small independent film. They show how films are trying to help the environment.

Body Paragraph

A big problem is that film sets use too much energy. They need lots of lights, heating, and cooling. Traditional lights use a lot of power and make heat, so many energy are used for cooling. As a report said, "Big film shoots use as much energy as a small town."

LED lights are a good solution. They use less energy and produce less heat. In the Hollywood example, the team changed to LED lights. This saved energy and money. It shows that small changes can make a big difference.

Body Paragraph 2

Another problem is traveling. Film crews and equipment move long distances. This creates pollution and costs a lot. An article noted, "Transport costs are high, and emissions are bad for the planet."

Some films solve this in smart ways. They hire local people at filming spots. it cuts travel and pollution. Also, they use virtual sets. In the independent film, virtual sets were used for some scenes. It saved money and helped the environment. It also gave local jobs.

Conclusion

As a result, filmmakers are working to make their industry green. They use LED lights, hire locals, and use virtual sets. These ideas can also help other industries. If more films do this, the industry will be better for the planet.

1. Description

This week, I studied the structure of English academic essay writing, including introductions, body paragraphs, conclusions and topic sentences. The teacher showed us examples to explain how topic sentences start a paragraph. I was surprised to find essays writing need a clear structure, like an introduction that goes from general to specific. This is different from Chinese I wrote before, but it’s easy to follow now.

2. Feelings

At first, I felt confused about using linking words like "however" and "for example". But when the teacher broke down a sample essay, I understood the topic sentence + example + explanation. That made me feel more confident. Now I’m excited to try writing, but I always still worried about making mistakes.

3. Evaluation

The diagram showing essay structure as a "funnel" helped me a lot. It’s clear why introductions need to start widely and then focus on the thesis. The hard part is choosing the right words to connect ideas. I used to think writing was just about ideas, but now I know structure is really important in English.

4. Analysis

I’ve written essays in Chinese, but English ones are more structured. The biggest challenges are:

- Using linking words correctly (e.g., "firstly" vs. "at first")

- Making sure each topic sentence directly supports the thesis

I need more practice with simple structures before trying complex ones.

5. Conclusion

I learned that English essays have a clear "formula" to follow. Now I know topic sentences must link to the main idea, and conclusions shouldn’t have new points. But I still don’t know how to vary sentence structures. My goal is to practice writing one body paragraph every day.

6. Action Plan

Next, I will:

- Read an essay example and circle linking words

- Write some short paragraphs on some different topic using topic sentence + example

I’ll know I’m improving when my writing feels more organized and easier to read.

Signposting in Presentations

Signposting words like “First, Second” are super helpful. They guide the audience, so they don’t get lost. I’ll use these clear markers next time to make my ideas easy to follow.

Academic Poster Must - Haves

A good poster needs a clean style. Pick matching colors, a neat layout (so info flows well), big readable fonts, proper spacing (no clutter!), and images that support the topic. References should be tidy too.

My Identity Poster: Hits & Misses

I did well on using relevant images. But fonts were too small, and colors were messy. Need to fix that!

Feedback & Changes

Classmates said my intro was weak, and the tutor noted messy references. This time, I’ll make the intro punchy (using “First, let’s…”), use bigger fonts, choose a simple color palette, and organize references neatly.

Feelings for Upcoming Presentation

I feel more ready now! With clear signposting and a better - designed poster, I’m less nervous. Excited to try these changes and do better!

First, let's look at the problem. Gaming consoles and equipment aren't just fun—they're made using a lot of resources. The materials to build them come from mining, which uses up Earth's treasures. Also, these devices need energy to work. Imagine, each console might use around 200 watts! And all together, gaming gear emits a huge 24 million tons of CO₂. That's bad for our air and the whole planet.

But don't worry—there are solutions, and we can all be part of them. Let's talk about three big ideas: recycling and e - waste programs, trade - in or take - back programs, and certified e - waste recyclers.

Recycling and e - waste programs are amazing. Some recyclers now offer free or cheap ways to recycle old game consoles. Instead of throwing them in the trash, which becomes e - waste in landfills, we can send them to be recycled. This way, the materials get reused, and we save resources. It's like giving old gaming stuff a second life.

Then there are trade - in or take - back programs. Makers and stores often give us money or discounts if we return our old consoles. These consoles can be fixed up or recycled properly. So, we get a little reward, and the environment gets a big help. It's a win - win!

Certified e - waste recyclers are also key. These are special companies that know exactly how to handle gaming equipment without harming the environment. They follow strict rules to recycle in a way that's safe for our planet. When we use their services, we make sure our old gaming gear doesn't become a pollution problem.

Gaming is awesome, but we need to enjoy it responsibly. By taking these steps, we can keep having fun playing games and also take care of our planet. Let's be the generation of gamers who protect the environment while having a great time.
