Back then, reprimanding children was not frowned upon. Today it's the opposite and is seen as wrong and cruel. As far truancy, it is stricter and demands that the child stays in school. Scout was far more advanced than the students in the class, yet we see her punished for being far ahead. Now it is appraised, and they offer classes for advanced students. with the institution of technology, they now have replaced some old and outdated items (E.g. chalkboards,). The Cunninghams suffered a lot from the Great Depression.
