Education from the 1930s has vastly changed in disciplinary actions, advanced education, the inclusion of technology, resources for children. Back then, reprimanding children was not frowned upon. Today it's the opposite and is seen as wrong and cruel. As far truancy, it is stricter and demands that the child stays in school. Scout was far more advanced than the students in the class, yet we see her punished for being far ahead. Now it is appraised, and they offer classes for advanced students. with the institution of technology, they now have replaced some old and outdated items (E.g. chalkboards,). The Cunninghams suffered a lot from the Great Depression. Walter is unable to afford lunch, but now they have just recently started to provide free lunch for everyone

One of the main events that gave Scout a distaste for going to school was being told that she was not to read with her father anymore. Scout exhibits a desire to read and to learn despite her saying that she did not like to because it came as second nature to her. This desire is not rewarded in school, where one would assume it would be, furthering the assumption that the education system is flawed and failing her.

This is further demostraited by how he offten teaches his children life lessons.

Again, the Ewell's simply aren't interested in receiving an education. Primarily this probably has to do with the lack of a good father figure in their life. Despite them actually having a father, he is alcoholic. He sets a bad example for them, and seems to hardly pay attention to his kids at all.

Scouts first year of education in the 1930's just shows how far it was from its full potential and how impoverished it was. There was many places for improvement. For one, it would be the allowance of advanced classes for kids. Especially since Scout knew how to read well, but the teacher punished her for doing so. Quite a lot has changed through the century. There has been advancements and replacements in our education today
