The only time it is permissible to avoid telling the whole truth is if the truth is harsh and cruel. Therefore, you can just sugarcoat it to make it easier to swallow. In the story Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Gawain received kisses from the lord's lady however he refrained from telling the lord where the kisses where coming from to spare his feelings.

Adding to that, at the end he accepted to be smitten by the green knight for accepting the challenge

The only time it is permissible to avoid telling the whole truth is when it affects your life or others. Sir Gawain held the truth when he knew that it will cost him his life. In addition, saving the sash for himself does no harm for anyone, but instead it benefits him and makes him survive. In my opinion, Sir Gawain didn't lose his honor when he didn't tell the truth because dying for a Christmas game is trivial and meaningless.

1)For a person to be worthy of respect , they must earn it . In Medieval Romance , knights earned their respect by being chivalrous. For example : Sir Gawain earned his respect by accepting the challenge of the Green Knights instead of King Arthur. 2) Courage is the ability to do something difficult even when there's risk.Cowardice is the lack of courage to face danger and difficulty. For example: Sir Gawain was courageous because he step up to the green knight's challenge while the other knights showed their cowardice when no one step up to face the green knight's challenge.

Sir Gawain was courageous when he chose to face the Green Knight instead of King Arthur although he said he was "one of the weakest knights ", but a coward when he accepted the green sash (the girdle) from the Lord's wife because he was scared of dying.
3) In order to gain respect, one must respect himself or herself first . Keeping Promises is one way to gain respect from others , Sir Gawain earned his respect from the other knights when he took the Green knight`s challenge instead of King Arthur and kept his promise by going to meet the Green Knight to complete the challenge after one year.

In Sir Gawain and the green knight, Sir Gawain showed courage as he stood up for the challenge instead of king Arthur which showed his loyalty to his king and his bravery as an honorable man. However, he was a coward when he accepted the green sash from lord lady fearing to die.

2)when, if ever, is it permissible to avoid telling the whole truth?
The only time it is permissible to avoid telling the whole truth is when you are trying to protect yourself or when you feel its hard for the other person to accept it. In sir Gawain and the green knight, Sir Gawain hid the truth from the lord which is accepting the sash from his lady. He was confident during the game knowing that he wont die but eventually the truth was revealed by the lord as he is the one that arranged it.
