Perhaps BECAUSE of the wall-paper." in this quote the narrator tells us her feelings toward the wallpaper. She shows us she doesn't mind it being there for the period of time, but she really would rather have it gone. The author might start the story with this tone to show that in the beginning her illness didn't override her and she was in control.  As we dive deeper into the story we see her get more suspicious about the wallpaper she feels as if the wallpaper is hiding something. "The front pattern DOES move-and no wonder! The women behind shakes it!......Sometimes I think there are a great many women behind, and sometimes only one, and she crawls around fast, and her crawling shakes it all over." In this quote we see the suspiciousness the author feels. The narrator explains this by the many marks and scratches she see's on the wallpaper. The narrator can not tell reality apart from her hallucinations she see's. We see this confusion when the narrator says "then she said that the paper stained everything it touches, that she had found yellow smooches on all my clothes and John's, and she wished we would be more careful!" This quote shows how the narrator combines her reality and her hallucinations.
