In Afghanistan, the Taliban have taken over the country yet again. Around 30,000 Afghans are fleeing every week. The Taliban's extreme regime has created a lot of fear amongst many Afghans which has resulted in a lot of them trying to flee the country seeking refuge in mainly Europe, Turkey and Pakistan. Since the Taliban have taken over, they've tried to stop Afghans from leaving the country. The airport is packed on a daily basis, lines to get visas and passports are enormous, people are taking risky trips to try and escape. Many Afghans are also being displaced within Afghanistan, forced to live in cramped rooms far from their homes because of the recurring violence. The UN is saying that this could ultimately result in yet another humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan

Globally, many countries (especially in Europe) are hesitant to take in Afghan refugees in fear that this will result in a crysis similar to the one in 2015 with Syrian refugees and also because of the Covid virus, many countries have placed severe restrictions that make it very difficult for anyone to enter and or leave. Before the Taliban even took over, half of Afghanistan's population already needed humanitarian assistance, now the demand is even greater and the pressure even bigger for major humanitarian organizations like the UN to intervene. A lot of news channels and articles have been critical and speculating as to what American troops have actually been doing in Afghanistan for the past 20 years if the Taliban were so easily able to gain complete control over the country yet again; a lot of pressure has now been put on the Biden administration to help and protect the many Afghans in distress.

Currently, around 330,000 Afghans have been displaced (fleeing their homes within Afghanistan and or leaving the country all together) in fear of the harsh new reality they are facing. Many of the Afghan refugees are going to neighboring countries like Pakistan and Iran and those who can, to Europe and Turkey. A lot of these refugees however, don’t have the means to obtain passports and visas legally therefore their only option is to illegally flee Afghanistan by taking difficult and dangerous trips in extreme weather or getting into smugglers cars in order to cross borders. The Taliban have used threats and violence and have also blocked airports and major exits to prevent people from fleeing the country.

Some 20 years ago, President George W Bush deployed American troops to Afghanistan to help the fight against terrorism prompted shortly after the 9/11 attack. Only recently has current president Joe Biden withdrawn American troops from Afghanistan. This has allowed the Taliban to take over the country much easier and implement their new severe regime that would affect Afghanistan and the world in several different ways

In 1996, after the Soviets started withdrawing their troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban rose to power. Now, in 2021, after the Americans started withdrawing their troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban has risen to power yet again. There is now a lot of fear amongst many Afghans, fear of the return of an extremist rule, fear of being oppressed (especially when it comes to women), fear of war and violence. For many Afghans, their only hope is to flee.

The Taliban follows a very extreme and completely twisted regime based on their own versions of the teachings of the Quran and islamic religion. The Taliban's beliefs are very oppressive and under the Taliban’s rule, Afghanistan has become one of the countries with the worst human rights. This is especially true for women in Afghanistan. The Taliban's war against women has become so strong to the point where women have been denied basic human rights.

Under the Taliban's rule, women are denied basic health and education, they are forced to quit their jobs and ordered to stay at home. They are forced to cover up completely and cannot walk about without a man present. Women are especially vulnerable to different violent acts perpetrated by the Taliban including assault, rape, forced marriage. One university student recalled the moment she found out the Taliban had taken over the country. She was forced to give up her job and wasn’t able to graduate in one of the top universities in Afghanistan, she felt like all of her hard work had just been thrown out of the window. She was no longer free, she couldn’t get her nails done anymore, could no longer meet up with friends at cafes, could no longer dress the way she wished to. She stated “As a woman, I feel like I am the victim of this political war that men started.”
