The city of Coalwood, West Virginia is a run down town, or as the author describes it, "slowly dying." Due to the conditions and resources of the town, it would be very hard to achieve certain dreams. This further conveys how times for Homer were particularly tough. Many dream on leaving the dying town, much like Homer, however the opportunities to achieve such a dream are very slim. Being either really smart or athletic. This is the adversity that Homer has to face throughout the book. Homer wants to be a rocket scientist, but with the lack of resources and opportunities that the town provides, it is very hard.

Crowley, Colin. Shanty Town in Kenya.

In the small town of Coalwood, there are not many job opportunities. If you do not make it out of the town, whether that be through scholarship in sports or education, you will most likely end up working in the coal mine. The working conditions of the coal mine are so bad that the risk of fatal accidents are high. If not accident then lung disease or cancer from the fumes. The facts were that you would most likely die from working in coal mines, most by diseases later in life. This becomes Homer's motivation, to not end up like his father in a dead end town at a dead end job. To push through the problems to become successful.

"Deadly Bangladesh Garment Factory Fire Spotlights Poor Working Conditions (+video)." The Christian Science Monitor.

With all the things that Homer is facing at the time, he still manages to succeed with his passion. Homer befriends someone that he would normally not talk to and get help from him. He also gets help from his teacher and some locals. Although, with all this help most of the town and his father thinks it's all a waste of time and shameful. The town makes fun of him for having such unrealistic goals, and his father believes that his family his being shamed for this and it's a waste of time. Homer does not get discouraged even when his own father won't accept what he is doing as realistic.

"The Center for Self-Determination." The Center for Self-Determination.

No matter how crazy Homer's requests or dreams became, his mother supported him. Having to deal with a rocket scientist son, another son, a borderline crazy husband, and the disapproval and judgment of the whole town. She has been very supportive. Not to mention his friends for helping him and another for teaching him about rockets and the science. Just another townsfolk helping him by building and supplying him with free materials for his experiments. Homer was never alone during his whole experience, he had the people around him to support him.

Jeff Mitchell Jenny Webb. "Support." Peer Support Program.

Homer dreams of being a rocket scientist. Which is not an easy task in itself, but it also does not help that he and the town he lives in is poor. Also the lack of education and resources do not help his cause. Even though there were times that looked dim or as if it all ended, but he kept going and dreaming. Like what was said earlier he was supported but not by everybody. Many did not accept what he was doing. But his passion for his dreams was good enough to keep the fire going. Due to his hard work he eventually made it to NASA and became a rocket engineer there.

@entertainmentIE.
