My mentor teacher has included a community map, where his students were able to model their own communities. This map is displayed on the wall for students and their peers to see every day. I believe this is a great way to incorporate students' backgrounds and culture into the class culture, and to help students be engaged in the topics that they are learning about.

In this classroom, I have seen how my mentor teacher values a students' ability to make choices. In the short time I have been in here, I have witnessed multiple opportunities where Mr. Rollins gave students a choice in their learning. For example, in their history project over the states, they were allowed to research different states and do their projects over the state that most interested them. I believe this creates a sense of ownership and responsibility in their learning.

I love the idea of the believe in your #SELFIE wall. This would be a fun way for students in their class to incorporate themselves, their families, or other things in their lives to be displayed in the classroom, while also promoting the message of empowerment and self belief. Sadly the wall is empty, and contributes to the lack of a high quality classroom appearance.

With every class, Mr. Rollins begins by giving his students the space to share any news they would like to celebrate. This has been a great way to show students that he cares for their lives, and I can see how he has strong relationships with his students.

Hispanic Heritage Month

As it is Hispanic Heritage Month, my mentor teachers gives time with his Hispanic students in every class to be able to share their traditions that they value, if there are any dances or music that mean something to them, or anything else they would like to have a conversation about. He also prompts Hispanic students to get with non Hispanic students to pair up, and give the Hispanic student the opportunity to teach the other student some Spanish. The students are given different videos, articles, drawing pages, and other resources to prompt learning. It's interesting to see how some students are passionate about their heritage, while other's are confused why we are having these conversations. I think this is valuable for these conversations to be had with students, so that we can normalize these conversations and promote the importance of different cultures. I also appreciate that he allows students to lead the conversations and do the teaching, so they can be the voices of their own story.

The classroom that I am in has very minimal decoration on the wall, aside from the presidents and the community map wall. There is a lot of clutter around all four borders of the room. Even for myself, this can make students overwhelmed and distracted. There are messy piles of books around the room, globes stacked on top of books, a broken globe on the floor, etc. I think it is important to have an organized and friendly appearance. This can help students not be overstimulated by clutter.

I appreciate how this structure allows students to work collaboratively with one another, and it creates a friendlier space for the children to learn.

I believe Mr. Rollins does an amazing job being equitable with his students, one way being his ability to respect and promote student voices in his classroom. I can see how he shifts his teaching as he approaches each student, and that shows me that he knows his students' needs and understands how each student requires a unique instructional approach.

1. One classroom management technique I observed was how my mentor teacher uses tickets to pass out when students are doing a great job.
2. When two students had an argument, rather than disciplining one of them or finding who was at fault, he spoke to each student and asked them both to think of a solution to the problem.
3. Mr. Rollins does a great job with having high standards for his students and finding ways to appreciate and uplift his students.
4. Student choice is a big part of his classroom, and I think that is a huge part of why his students are engaged for the most part.

Students have access to daily schedules, including links and resources to what they will be doing in each class. Mr. Rollins emphasizes an importance of rules and structure in his classroom. They have specific stages on how to move from one class to the next, how to move through the halls, and how to act within the classroom. Mr. Rollins spoke with me about how routines and structure are extremely helpful to have in your classes and how important it is to communicate those and enforce them from the beginning of the year.

I have seen a lot of student interaction and voice utilized in many of Mr. Rollins' lessons. He utilizes strategies such as Think-Pair-Share often. He is extremely positive and encouraging with students, and I think that helps them want to continue to be engaged in their learning. Mr. Rollins used a tool called "story starters." Students were first not excited when they heard they had to do a creative writing assignment. However this website was a really fun way to get students excited and engaged. It gave them funny prompts to write stories about. Students had a lot of fun writing and sharing their stories they created.
