He holds an extreme desire control and perfection. Vidal keeps a pocket watch that used to be fathers not to remember his father but out of the fear of his own death.

Vidal hosts a meal with his members where they discussion of food rations but you can they are having a very healthy amount of food at their disposal on this table. 

"From now on, one ration card per family. Take a look at them. One? Only one. Captain, I'm not sure it will be enough. If people are careful it should be plenty"

In the Pale Mans case, Ofelia is told before visiting to not eat a single piece of food, even though he has a plethora of food at his disposal as well. Ofelia disobeys and eats a singular grape and the pale man is instantly alerted.

The Faun in Pan's Labyrinth represents a vessel in which Ofelia decides her own path and fate through her decisions. The life sucking toad in the colossal fig tree is a metaphor for the sometimes harsh reality of the creation of life. When the camera pans on the tree it very reminiscent of the female reproductive system. This situation resembles the same situation that Ofelia's mother is going through with her baby brother.
