I feel that this book is a great entry point into what activism means for students. It is more abstract in it's explanation, rather than using specific historical figures as representations of activism. In this way, students are able to see themselves as activists, and therefore be able to also see themselves in the activists that will be introduced through other texts. It is also written by Amanda Gorman, who delivered a powerful poem at the Presidential Inauguration as the youngest inaugural poet ever!

This story is a great addition to our text set because it not only shows the importance of taking a stand being an activist, as Lillian was along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 60s, but also gives insight on the history of voting rights and activism in the United States. Through Lillian's flashbacks, students are able to be exposed to racism, and also understand ageism, as Lillian is almost 100 years old and still an active member of society because she is voting! The books is longer in length and more challenging in content, making it appropriate for second grade students to read with teacher support, as they are learning about about activists as people in their community.

I think the book is appropriate for 2nd graders because it is written in a simple and engaging way that helps young children understand the importance of fairness, inclusion, and standing up for what is right. The text is just wordy enough that it poses a challenge, yet not too difficult for children to understand. The illustrations make the story more accessible, and it introduces the concept of activism in a way that empowers them to believe they can make a difference, even at a young age. I believe this is a great tool for teaching children about advocacy, equality, and the power of collective action.

I believe that this book is great for explaining activism to students. Having real world stories and people explained to you but in simpler terms is important because these are people that students should learn about and know. It uses its platform for information and is abstract in explanation allowing for students to have visual components along with their reading in order to see everything that is happening in the book. Also it is important for students to learn about all types of activists so that they have a broad range of knowledge.

I feel that this book is a great introduction to activism because there are so many books on womens equality that are explanatory but i feel that putting a young child into the perspective like the character of the little girl, allows them to feel like they are a part of the story because they are seeing someone like them. Also it allows for students to see the unity in movements and marchs and that they are all for a good cause and positivity in a cause.

This is great for 2nd grade because I believe the language used was appropriate, while also not being too simple. Additionally, many of the children in this book look 2nd-grade-aged so students will feel empowered seeing figures like themselves in the pages. These true-to-life examples of how students can make a difference would be a great closing to a lesson about activism!
