According to National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the cause of asthma is known as “ hygiene hypothesis” (NHLBI, 2020). Children who are growing up in a household where improper practice of hygiene and sanitation is putting the children on the higher risk of asthma.

Low income residents are seeking affordable homes, and families are ending up sharing a fence line with a refinery and a cluster of other polluting businesses. Affordable homes are helping them save money but the cost of health exposure to polluting is costing more.

Richmond’s rate (30.5 per 10,000) is nearly double the county. According to the figure below, African American children in Contra Costa County are hospitalized for asthma at a rate almost four times that of White, Asian and Latino children, and almost three times that of the county’s children overall.
