This scene where we find out that Eddie had a true love is special because it was introduced in a way that makes it significant. The story didn't open when a tradgic love story or bring it up right before he died, but instead they talked about a 'true-love snapshot'. This scene is placed and organized in a way that shows it is and will be important later on in the story.

When the blue man starts talking to Eddie, he doesn't seem all too significant but when we get to the lesson, he is extremely important. It's common nature to blame yourself over things that you have no control over, especially death. But here, the blue man explains how death comes for everyone but sometimes misses one person and chooses another, it's a natural proccess that no one has control over, and that Eddie should not blame himself for his death.

In this moment, we see a heroic act. Eddie, although he is old and injured, lunging to save the small girl, who's parents weren't paying attention to, from being crushed in the falling of the cart. Although in the end it was useless, this still shows the danger and bravery that workers have at amusement parks and especially how much Eddie cares for the children.

One of Eddie's first thoughts when he arrives in this calming, serial atmosphere, is if he saved the girl or not. This can be viewed to see how Eddie didn't just save the girl because there was a crowd and no one else was doing anything, but the fact he actually cared for her and wanted to save her. He doesn't, and probably won't know what happened to her, but he will wonder about it throughout his journey.

The third lesson, which Eddie's Captain from the war tells him, is all about sacrifice and how it affects people. While you may sacrifice something precious to you, it is passed along to another person. This is seen when the Captain checks out the path and sets off a land mind, so while he did sacriface his life, he pasted that chance at life to Eddie and the other soldiers because if he didn't check they would of all drove over the mine and died.

In this flashback, Eddie is thinking about shortly before he went to war and he' was playing a shooting game on the pier. Mickey had shown up and, although not in the best way, explained and told him how in the war you cannot think before shooting because thinking will get5 you killed. I think this was a great topic to talk upon in the book even for a brief moment.

When the Captain tells Eddie that during the war, when Eddie was going to run into a burning building and loose his life, the captain was the one that shoot his leg to stop him. He aknolweded the fact that Eddie was very upset about it, and gave Eddie the chance to get out that ang-ler and frustration , like a true solider he didn't try to tell Eddie he was over reacting or anything and took the responsibilty for his actions.

Although a tragic scene, I think this scene was well done because most people acknowledge the fact that soldiers see their friends and/or family die in the war, but no one ever considers how helpless they can feel when they witness their friend/family get killed before their eyes. The scene didn't completely go into emotions but with three lines, you could tell the despair and helplessness the other felt in the situation.

The third person Eddie meets is Ruby, the namesake and wife to the man who created Ruby Pier. Although Eddie doesn't directly know her, I believe this was a nice choice of person for Eddie to meet. While she was there to help Eddie with his dad, she brought a new perspective to things instead of having Eddie directly speaking to his father.

I like this quote and believe it holds a lot of power. In the end, it's true that all parents damage their children but it's up to them and their choices on how much they damage them. Everyone smudges their children, but to push them into cracking or even shattering is unnessicary and completely by choice. But the way this was worded in such a short explantion but completely understable is poetic.

Even today, most childern do not completely understand the actions of their parents. Although Eddie's father didn't do it in the best way, he still pushed his son to move with his life and brought aspects into Eddie's life that he needed. Most childern don't realize how important their parents pushing can be until they grow up and look back.

This is another powerful quote, explaining what it is like to hold anger and a strong grudge. It's similar to guilt, but while guilt always eats at you anger pulls you under the surface and blinds you with rage.

The fourth lesson, by Eddie's wife Marguerite, is a very strong and powerful lesson about love. If you've ever been in love, you can relate and take this lesson. Even though Marguerite was talking about love after death, you can also apply this lesson to breakups or friendships, which I think is a great way to express a universal lesson

The fifth person Eddie meets in heaven is a little girl named Tala, and she was the girl burned during the war. She asks Eddie to clean her, and when he goes to he starts to rub off her scars. I believe this has a secret meaning behind it, showing how even when someone has scars they can still be themselves and move on through a clean view. She also appeared normal to him at first, which could mean even with scars the person is still themselves

I like how they structured the last birthday chapter, because the short paragraphs really helps represent how quickly and unimportant the birthdays after Marguerite's birthdays were to Eddie. They still happened, but weren't important enough to remember or care in his opinion

I like how in the end the author came back around and connected all the dots. Connecting these dots really helped support the first lesson that everything that happens is connected in one way or another. Nicky was introduced as the kid who lost his car key, which got jammed into the ride cable. That car cable later snapped and killed Eddie. Eddie then met Ruby, the wife of the man who built and the name sake of Ruby Pier. We are then revealed that Ruby is Nicky's great-grandmother. In the end, it was all connected one way or another and through a chain of events led them all to the pier which is the most important setting of the whole book.
