Ten Adab of Seekers of Knowledge – Notes by Ayaz Siddiqui

The Five Outward Manners of Seeking Knowledge:

1) Repeat and Review
-Commenting on this advice, Shaykh Faraz tells us that by repetition, even donkeys learn so there is no reason why we humans cannot learn through repetition.
-Review key concepts, conditions, and integrals because if you understand these clearly, you understand what you are studying.

2)Take Notes
-Take notes while listening, but also make your own notes on readings that are prescribed or supplemental material described in the lecture.

3)Ask!
-The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “The cure for confusion is but to ask”.

4)Extra readings
-The strong student of knowledge is one who learns the core of their knowledge through teachers but at the same time they continue reading to gain breadth of knowledge.

5)Prepare for class
-The best way to prepare for a class is to prepare so much that you know the subject better than the teacher.

The Five Inward Manners of Seeking Knowledge:

1. Intention
-Have a high intention of why you are seeking knowledge. Is it to seek the pleasure of Allah (may He be exalted), or are you seeking knowledge to show off?

2. Clear & Defined Goals
-Have a clear sense of what you are seeking, and define what your goals are for seeking knowledge. What are you trying to achieve? How are you going to go about seeking knowledge? Do you want to be able to teach others?

3. Veneration
-Have a deep, unshakeable respect for scholars (even when we disagree), writings of scholars, books (which are the vessels containing the water of guidance), and even knowledge itself.

4. Adab (Manners)
-Have proper adab (manners) – you can only have adab if you learn about it

5. Consistency
-Learn something every day and review every day. Our lives are busy, but at the same time we should set aside some time every day to learn.

The sciences of the Sharia’ return back to this hadith due to it encompassing knowledge of the Sunnah. Hence, some of the scholars have termed this hadith the Mother or Core of the Sunnah, just as Surah al-Fatiha has been termed the Mother or Core of the Qur'aan, due to it containing the entire Message of the Qur'an.

This hadith is also known as Hadith Jibreel (Angel Gabriel) (as). The hadith tells the story of Jibreel (as) when he came to the Prophet (sas), asking a set of questions. The Prophet (sas) responded to those questions and then addressed his companions.

1- Belief in Allah
Belief in Allah is the foundation of Islam. To believe in Allah you must know who is called Allah. To know God is to know the attributes of God.

2- Belief in Angels
Angels are creatures created from nur (light). It is a creature that is not given lust and desire like humans. So Angels are not driven to immoral things.

3- Belief in Prophet (SAW)
The Prophet of God is a man who has perfect senses and intellect. There are no female Prophets in Islam. There is an opinion of scholars who say that the number of the Prophet of ALLAH is as many as 126,000 people. All the Prophets of God received the revelation brought by the Angel Gabriel. Muslims must believe in all the Prophets of ALLAH whether they are known by name or not.

Ihsan and eschatology

In a famous hadith qudsi, Allah Most High, has declared that He is Time. In our Life; in this world, before we entered our mothers’ wombs and after we exit this world to enter the barzakh and beyond, there are four kinds of Time in motion the comprehension of which is essential to know what Islamic Eschatology is.

There is the time that commenced its motion when Allah Most High commanded all the Arwah to enter into the process of Life on earth. He, subhanahu wa ta’ala, said (during the events of Awwal az-Zaman described in the Quran), “Get ye down altogether…” after His acceptance of Adam’s (alayhissalam) repentance. Through life on Earth, the Arwah are on a journey of return to Allah, Most High. “We belong to Allah and to Him is Our Return.” Not forgetting this time, living in embrace of this journey, and acting in accordance to that is al-Ihsan.

Then there is another time in parallel that is outside the first. The beginning was when Adam alayhissalam first came to Earth in the human body. The end will be when the Trumpet is blown and the Hour comes upon the worst of mankind. The last phase of this entire period is called Akhir az-Zaman and the Nabi sent to Akhir az-Zaman with a revelation was our Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. This is history; the past, present and future. This last phase commenced with the coming of Nabi Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

The third is the serial time that we today know as mechanical time for those who consider it an achievement to have quantified it, or otherwise for the naturalists, they may want to rather call it solar and/or lunar time. However, they may call it, they are both the same. This is our day and night, week, month and year each moving on its own course; it is the routine of mundane life; this is our Personal Present. If the first and the second above is not relevant to this time, then we will become oblivious of Islam and Iman. When the first and second joins here in the third, then the man becomes ibn al-waqt, which Nietzsche could have attempted to call Übermensch.

The last is within the third. The attempt to understand this is one of the first proper functioning of the intellect, which causes man to ask the ultimate questions of life. It may be called biological time. The beginning is the sense of hearing at birth and the end is also the same at death. In between is all the senses and the matters of external observation and rational analysis. The relevance of al-Islam and al-Iman is situated in the third and the fourth. This last one is where we begin our study and it is the remembrance of death.

Now, Islamic Eschatology or what we may call ‘Ilmu Akhir az-Zaman is – both the logos, which is external and the internal struggle – towards the realisation of all the four times in constant motion reverberating in the human being that causes him to act. When Islamic Eschatology is scientised and does not cause him to act in this manner, then it is not what we mean by Islamic Eschatology. Most studies today in Islamic Eschatology are logical perspectives of what we have defined above as history, or the second time in motion. Such can be taught at the universities. We have no time for that.
