Daisy Buchanan's desire for her daughter to be a fool is startling at first--why would any woman want her daughter to be a fool? Why does Daisy think this is the best thing for a woman to be? We know very little about Daisy up to this point, but this comment leads me to believe she is disappointed, cynical, and even bitter towards the world and its treatment of women at the time.

"Tom's got some woman in New York"

Daisy and Tom may seem at surface to have a decent relationship by early 1900's standard, but this line tells the reader that Tom is a cheater who is proud enough by it that he doesn't even try to hide it. This allows the reader to truly know that they are supposed to dislike Tom. This also gives us the possibility of a soon coming meeting with Toms "woman" and maybe even an altercation between one of the characters and Tom about her.

It's crazy how people can talk behind others' backs and really affect them. What they talk about gets back to them and won't always be true which then just frames the person. It can affect them as much as forcing them/being the reason they move away.

"...(Tom) said glancing at Daisy, and then back at me as if he were alert for something more."

I'm curious to know what made Tom glance over to Daisy before returning to the narrator. Also, the way it was worded almost sounds like he's nervous about something happening. Maybe it will get addressed further into the story.

"Something in his leisurely movements and the secure position of his feet upon the lawn suggested that it was Mr. Gatsby himself, come out to determine what share was his of our local heavens."

This sentence exemplifies how highly Nick thinks of Mr. Gatsby, implying that he is a higher individual. His close observation of Gatsby is showing his minor obsession with him, saying his "leisurely movements" and "secure position of his feet"
