He pushed for big families. He also launched the "Great Leap Forward". The goal was to make China a modern industrial country and a world power. Sadly, the efforts didn't work out as planned, and a famine was caused and killed 20million people within a four year span.  After Mao's death, China instituted the one-child policy  to start to control the ever growing population. Punishments were administered to those who did not follow the program and rewards to those who did. Over the years the program has gone more to rewarding, but there are still punishments. In some rural areas couples are allowed 2 children.  China has had many positive benefits of this policy.

To combat the pollution, China is looking into cleaner sources of energy,such  as hydroelectric power.  They built the biggest dam in the world in 2009 called the Three Gorges dam. The dam provides a lot of energy from its 26 generators and makes river travel easier. His goal was to make China self sufficient and not relying on any other country. after his death, the next leaders made China open to the rest of the world. They wanted to boost the economy by having foreign countries invest in China  and start businesses here. the only glitch was that other countries didn't want to be controlled by China's government. To fix this China set up special economic zones (SEZs). SEZs have boosted the economy, created millions of jobs, and helped to improve standard of living for people.  The SEZs have also widened the gap between the  rich and the poor. This could lead to unrest in the future.

If more money is spent on health care and education, especially for women, population might not rise as much. Women that are educated tend to have less children than those who are not. Health care would raise life expectancy and lower infant mortality rates, make people less likely to have more children because they know their children will survive longer. This was in part due to the country's isolation, with deserts, mountains, and an ocean separating them away from the rest of the world.  China and the USA are roughly the same size, but China is slightly larger than  the US. However the landscapes are very different. China is sometimes described as a giant slope stretching from the mountains of Central Asia and the Pacific Ocean.  On top of the slope, mountains,hills, plateaus and the basins of western China  would be visible. A little bit lower and in central China you would see smaller versions of everything except basins, as well as the Gobi desert. In eastern China there are low hills, fertile river valleys, plains, floodplains, and most of China's population.  China was the first country to reach 1 billion people in the 1980's. From 1950 to 1990, China's population doubled to 1.1billion. The time it took for the  population to double is called doubling time. The rate of natural increase is the annual growth rate of a population. These two are connected. The higher the rate of natural increase, the shorter the doubling time.
