The Nat Turner rebellion occurred for two days in 1831 in Virginia. It was led by Nat Turner and killed between 55 and 65 people. This rebellion lessened pro-slavery attitudes, however, it resulted in new laws that prohibited the education, movement, and assembly of slaves. This act also made the federal government responsible for finding these slaves as well as returning and trying them. These runaway slaves were not allowed to testify for themselves or be tried by a jury. Marshals who refused to enforce this law were penalized and fined around $1000. 1 → Slaves could not gather in groups of three or more. 
2 → Slaves could not leave their owners' land without a written pass. 
3 → Slaves could not own a gun.
4 → Slaves could not learn to read or write. 
“Sold down the river” was a betrayal. Slaves would be auctioned off to other plantation owners and were scared to be separated from their families through this process. “River” was a direct reference to the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.
