What is White Privilege, Really?

White privilege in this article is defined very differently than how it would have been in Their Eyes Were Watching God. It is a very different time period, the article talks about a more modern America, while the book talks about an early 1900's America, and obviously there have been many changes since then. This shows that we have moved forward as a society, just based on what is white privilege now vs. then. Back then white privilege would've been white people's wealth and their higher class status, but now white privilege is things like band-aids being the color of white skin or ethnic hair products having their own separate section in the grocery store

Part of the cause of racism is that people cannot understand the cultures of others. Early Americans have always had false conceptions of the life of blacks and what life is like where they're from. Americans had the perception that Africa is this barbaric place where there is constant murder and rape, but that's not the case and now we realize that as a nation. The writers of early America and our lack of knowledge of other cultures gave America these false stereotypes, because since that's all that was written, that was all that was believed. In early America, blacks were treated as less than human and were almost always made to be slaves. In modern America this is not the case, people of all races have the ability to live the lives they would like

Hate comes from fear. Early Americans had never experienced black men and women before, so like many other situations they began to fear the blacks because they weren't like them. This fear led to hate and unfortunately that hate lasted for a long and is still alive inside some people. However, as a whole, America has grown to try to understand instead of fear. We all know all races are humans and should be treated equally and have had conversations about ways for all races to understand each other

Blacks in early America were controlled by whites. They did not have a say in anything nor did they have much control over anything in their lives. This is obviously no longer the case, however blacks are still judged and stereotyped before they do anything by some. This is a problem because it doesn't allow people of a minority to speak their thoughts freely and this is a good example of modern racism, it is not as direct as how slavery used to be in the early 1900s but it definitely still exists

Blackface goes way back in history, however for the most part it stayed there. Americans used to use blackface in theater and other entertainment to feel safe and empowered, however now most blackface happens on halloween with white Americans dressing like a black celebrity. Although this is still racist and wrong it has evolved since first started and has become a lot less of a problem in modern day American society

Household Labor, Gender Roles, and Family Satisfaction: A Cross-National Comparison (Article from Digital Maine Library)

In the article, Renata Forste and Kiira Fox conduct an experiment to find out if men and women think his or her partner is doing enough to help around the house and to provide for the family. The study revealed that 46% of participants said men should be doing more around the house to help. This relates a lot to Their Eyes Were Watching God because Janie meets two different men in relationships that make her do all the work in their business and around the house instead of doing it themselves. However, since the time of the book, more and more men have began to work around the house more, and more women now have everyday jobs to provide for the family

This article explores the definition of masculine and feminine and then attaches those definitions to the types of work a man and a woman do to see if they become more or less masculine/feminine. Females that worked jobs outside of the home were found to have more masculine traits than those who didn't, and men that did a lot of work around the house were found to have more feminine traits than those who didn't. This shows people's idea of gender roles don't always have to actually depend on the persons gender, but on the their character traits

Truth says that men think women cannot do anything for themselves and must be helped with everything. In the time of the poem, 1851, most of America believed this to be true. However, in 2018, we know this obviously is not the case. There are many independent women with hardworking jobs that make lives for themselves without the aid of any men, and this is the America that Truth was hoping for and always knew women could achieve. This definitely shows how we've moved forward as a society

They are oppressed because they are told what to do and don't have much freedom because they have these jobs and must obey who they are being told by. We know this has changed in modern America as women are allowed to express themselves freely and independently

Cake-baker Jack Phillips refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple because he said it was against his religion, and the court justices ruled he could do this in defense of religious freedom. Now although I don't support the justices decision, this does still show how America has evolved. Early Americans would do this without a second thought and it would not be taken to court even if they didn't have a reason to refuse to bake them the cake because being gay was not really accepted by anyone back then. It is accepted now
