Faith Slimmer - Mental Heath Matters: Teenage Stress & Anxiety

I believe that the Mental Health Matters: Teenage Stress & Anxiety media project by Julia G. depicts the 5 Digital Citizenship Competencies and related ISTE Standards for Students. The five characteristics that make up the Digital Citizenship Competencies include alert, inclusive, informed, balanced, and engaged. In this project, Julia discusses the prevalence of stress and anxiety in high school students and the major causes. Julia demonstrates the Inclusive Competency by recognizing that there are a variety of causes of stress and anxiety. Although she personally experiences stress due to schoolwork she recognizes that many other people may experience stress and anxiety due to other reasons such as “friendships and familial relationships”. Julia further uses this media project as a way to connect with other students who also struggle with stress and anxiety. This connection reflects related ISTE standards. It is also evident that this project demonstrates the Informed Competency because Julia evaluated the accuracy and validity of the resources she used to create her project. For instance, she used a survey by the American Psychological Association to support her argument. By identifying credible resources online and giving credit to those resources, this project also reflects ISTE standards related to the Informed Competency. The Alert Competency is reflected in this media project as well. Julia explains that she hopes her project will spread awareness regarding student stress and anxiety, but also hopes that teenagers recognize that they are not alone. Through this aspiration, it is evident that Julia strives to create safe spaces for others online. Lastly, this media project reflects the Engaged Competency. The goal of this project is to use technology to ultimately be a force for good to advocate for students struggling with stress and anxiety in both physical and virtual communities. This goal reflects the ISTE standards that emphasize the importance of exploring real-world problems and using digital tools to share findings with others.

https://youthmedia.kqed.org/submission/NjYwMWJjY2I3YTc5NWU0NmVmODQ1MmFi

The presentation on the Salem Witch Trials by Teah S does a good job of showing the digital citizenship competencies and the ISTE student standards. The presentation is easy to read and understand and clear the documents resources. The student does not use any identifying information which shows that they are protecting their digital identity (alert). They demonstrate balance by using technology for school purposes. They show that they are engaged by creating a digital object to use for their project. They are informed by showing that they used appropriate sources for their project and they are also inclusive by making an infographic that is easy to read and access.

College enrollment and How it is Affected by Race - Nathan C.

This infographic discusses how race affects college enrollment, specifically at Ivy League schools. The creator uses the inclusive, balanced, and alert competencies by publishing their work. Through this website, many different types of people can read and interact with the piece. They also satisfy the inclusive competencies by being positive and ethical with their work. The author portrayed the engaged competency in many ways; they researched a real-world problem, used data in conjunction with technology to problem solve, and used technology to communicate learning with platforms that "matched" their learning. While all of the standards above identify them as a "Digital Agent," they also had to find credible sources online, making them a digital interactor.

Blair McGowan

Leilani Y. - The Anti Zionism of the Jewish Left By Oz R.

I loved this project by Oz R., which seemed deeply personal for the student and was a direct call for change. These two details alone are exemplary of the core competency “Engaged”. This project alone also is a great example of ISTE student standards as it is a beautiful project, hitting all the important features of the Creative Communicator and Global Collaborator standards. The project details the experience of the student raised half Jewish and with an extended family that supported Zionism. Stepping outside of this dominant familial perspective and calling for an understanding that Jewishness does not equate to Zionism was a take I was excited to hear about. The student provides a thorough cross-examination of both perspectives and provides familial background, which was a great example of being “Inclusive”. This is a well “Informed” project, as it ties in plenty of historical context and perspectives to this controversial topic to support their argument. I personally think this overall argument and evidence used to support it was a very “alert” stance that does not shut down conversations and opens up a safe space for voices that are being talked over among recent controversies (Anti Zionism of the Jewish Left vs the highlighted Zionism within the Jewish Community as of late). Although I can’t measure how “balanced” this project was/ the student was, I can see examples of the producer having an in-person experience, which then inspired them to talk about the issue.

Leah Summers- Equity in Education: Closing the Gap in Funding Disparities By: Keala M.

Inclusive: Keala demonstrates inclusive competency because the call to action project was also submitted as an audio with a transcript. The creator also recognizes that there is an uneven distribution of financial resources in public education, which perpetuates cycles of poverty and inequality.

Informed: The creator witnessed the Disparities firsthand because their mom was a teacher in an underfunded district. Keala also mentions statistics showing that low-poverty districts receive more money than high-poverty ones. Keala also recognizes additional challenges these low-income districts face, such as "lacking essential resources, struggling to attract qualified teachers, and even sometimes failing to prepare students for their future."

Engaged: Keala also goes deeper into this issue by relating it to how students don't just go through education inequality but also are most likely from low-income communities and recognize it as a systematic injustice.

Balanced: The author argues for equal funding access to break the cycle of poverty. Keala also explains that these students suffer from more stress, affecting their focus ability.

Alert: At the end, Keala calls for everyone to band together and show the government the changes that need to be made in education so that it can invest in America's future.
