The repercussions of the 2019 earthquakes is still taking a significant toll on many Mindanaons to this day. Many people lost their homes, people worried and were concerned, and false news was disseminated claiming that the Philippines will be devastated by a tsunami. Following a series of powerful earthquakes in 2019, many people were forced to stay in evacuation shelters, crammed in with 1000 other families, with no good ventilation, sanitation, or food and water supplies. Many of these families had been caught off guard.

Not only did Filipinos lack knowledge of what to do in the event of a natural disaster, but city governments also lacked manpower, technical knowledge and understanding of what to do before, during, and after natural disasters, financial resources, and technology such as a multi-hazard early warning system. Some government officials would even run away, in fear of being held accountable.

At the present we’re still facing this problem along with typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. The spread of the disease has also aggravated the impact of climate-related hazards. Health protocols such as social distancing and the wearing of face masks were often times violated. COVID-19 has the potential to spread quickly, especially in evacuation shelters. The pandemic exposed long-standing shortcomings in disaster preparedness and risk management in the Philippines. It revealed how poor the government is in disaster preparedness and calamity response. Many officials blame it on the pandemic, claiming that it made it more difficult for local governments to respond appropriately to calamities. However, similar gaps existed prior to the pandemic.

Fear, worry, and losses associated with disasters can be reduced by being prepared. Individuals, families, and communities should all be aware of what to do in the case of an earthquake and how to prepare for a typhoon. Being up to date on the latest typhoon information can already save your life, and it's as simple as packing a Go Bag.

The Build, Build, Build Program is often touted as the “centerpiece” of the Duterte Administration, aiming to spend at least P8.4-trillion worth of new infrastructure projects nationwide, from roads, bridges, airports, etc. As of June 19, 2021, a total of 10,376 flood mitigation structures were built under the Build,Build,Build program. Philippine News Agency.] The government is also conducting a nationwide earthquake drill every March, to orient and ensure that the citizens know what to do in case of an earthquake. In Davao City, a drill siren is being alarmed every Tuesday for a duration of 30 seconds to 1 minute, letting the whole city know that when an alarm sounds, it means that there is a tsunami.

With the fact that the Philippines is a magnet to natural disasters, it is important that one should stay prepared at all times. As simple as preparing a go bag, participating in the earthquake drills being conducted in school, workplace or nationwide, can help you survive. With all the calamities and natural disasters that Filipinos have faced throughout the year, they have shown that they could cope with the catastrophes  happening in the  country by making certain responses and movements that could help them rise again. As Mang Tani, GMA resident weather reporter, would quote it “ligtas ang may alam.”
