- Once There was a Time.. by Zipes, pages 10-11
"each narrative begins with a seemingly hopeless situation and that the narrative perspective begins with a seemingly hopeless situation and that the narrative perspective is sympathetic to the exploited protagonist of the tale" (9)
"passivity of the hero is to be seen in relation to the objectively hopeless situation of the folk tale audiences. These classes had practically no opportunity to resist in the increasing exploitation since they were isolated in their work" (9)
"
- Reluctant Brides by Marina Warner
"At a fundamental level, 'Beauty and the Beast' in numerous variations forms a group of tales which work out this basic plot, moving from the terrifying encounter with Otherness, to its acceptance" (276)
"Romance—love-in-marriage—was an elusive ideal, which the writers of the contes (italicized) sometimes set up in defiance of destiny" (278)
"The social revolution which has established both romantic and companionate marriage as the norm has irreversibly altered the reception of such romances, and ironically transformed certain women's examination of their matrimonial lot into materialistic propaganda for making a good marriage" (278)

- Absent Mothers Cinderella
"The woman narrator stressed co-operation in work and alliance brought u marriage, the man lineage and the acquisition of dowry; the woman's version enhanced the sisters' activity, courage, spirit, determination, their control of their dowries and labour" (208)
"The unhappy families of fairy tale typically suffer before a marriage takes place which rescues the heroine; but her situation was itself brought about by unions of one kind or another, so that when critics reproach fairy tale fort hr glib promise of its traditional ending- 'And they all lived happily ever after' - they overlook the knowledge of misery within marriage that the preceding story reveals in its every line" (217)
"The stories concentrate on unions made by law, on the reshaping of families from the biological order to the social; on mothers and sisters bestowed by legal arrangement, as well as the husbands" (217)

-Feminism and fairy tales by Karen E. Rowe
"Portrayals of adolescent waiting and dreaming, patterns of double enchantment, and romanticizations of marriage contribute to the potency of fairy tales" (237)
"These tales which glorify passivity, dependency, and self-sacrifice as a heroine's cardinal virtues suggest that culture's very surreal depends upon a woman's acceptance of roles which relegate her to motherhood and domesticity." (239)
"They transfer from fairy tales into real life those fantasizes which exalt acquiescence to male power and make marriage not simply one ideal, but the only estate toward which women should aspire. The idealizations, which reflect cultures approval, make the males choice to marriage and maternity seem commendable, indeed predestined" (239)
"the heroine dreamily anticipates conformity to those predestined roles of wife and mother" (243) this idea stemmed from how her fairy godmother helped her turn to a woman and maturation, idea of independence from childhood that she was abused from
(in reference to B&tB) "She has obligingly reformed sexual reluctance into self sacrifice to redeem Beast from death. She trades her independent selfhood for subordination. She garners social and moral plaudits by acquiescing to this marriage" (245)
"Nonetheless, fairy tale portrayals of matrimony as a woman's only option limit female visions to the arena of hearth and cradle, thereby perpetuation a patriarchal status quo. Whatever the daily reality of women's wedded or professional life, fairy tales require her imaginative assent to the proposition that marriage is the best of all possible worlds" (251)
"But as long as modern women continue to tailor their aspirations and capabilities to conform with romantic paradigms, they will live with deceptions, disillusionments, and/or ambivalences...reconstruct their reality into tenuous, self-deluding fantasies by suppressing any recognition of a secondary status and defending more vehemently the glories of matrimony and patriarchy....grown skeptical by the constant discrepancy between romantic expectations and actual relationships, other women will feel disillusioned" (252-53)

- Beauty doesn't realize she wants to wed the Beast until he is dying, and even then, she doesn't even claim she loves him, but rather she cannot live without him in her life
- "I admit I have no love for him, but he has my esteem, friendship and gratitude" (137)
-questions to answer: Why does this occur? Why does Beauty feel obligated to marry a guy she feels is a great friend to her?
-Again reaffirms the idea that this was not love, but something she felt obligated to do
- "lived together for a long time in happiness the more perfect because founded on virtue" (138)
- Again mentions the idea of happiness and other goof qualities the Beast displays, but no emphasis on love
