Assemblage

We recently bought our first home and it came with an incredible garden and an expansive yard for our dogs. It is the complete opposite of our last place. My assemblage is simple but represents my favourite features of our yard. The seed pod is from our large poinciana tree - the hero of our garden, it has a large stag horn fern on its trunk. My puppy loves finding the pods and runs around proudly with it in her mouth. The gravel is part of our outdoor patio, this where you will find my partner and I as it has the best view of our yard. The branch signifies us being surrounded by very tall trees that are often alive with the local birds. This activity was a wonderful way to make me sit back and see what I am so grateful for in my new home.

Rubbish and sustainability.

With my recent house move, I took the opportunity to do a wardrobe cleanout. These hangers represent multiple outfits that found their way to Vinnies. I am one of many women who are guilty of purchasing clothes impulsively and never finding even one occasion to wear them. A few pieces still had their tags!

Donating clothes in the hopes that they are reused instead of being in a landfill speaks to me as a sustainability effort. During our relocation, I also assisted in packing and sorting through my partner Nan's things who recently passed away. That made me realise how much we collect so many things over the years but keep nothing.

I am hoping to convey with my stop motion video my tendency to over-buy, specifically clothes and yet constantly wear the same four outfits.

The Aquarium

The green line I drew represents the first half of the movement, there are some longer flowing tones, the waves and spirals represent when the sounds becomes more rhythmic and patterned. Blue represents the second part of the movement, the music feels deeper and the changes are more frequent. The smaller lines and dots represent the quicker and sharper tones in the piece. With my own aquarium at home I would connect that to the movements of our smallest fish who dart around the tank. The blue and green emulates bigger fish who swim around in a more luxurious way with the odd turn. Blue and greens represent water and the calmness I often feel when sitting and watching an aquarium.

Starry Night Accompaniment

The track I created represents The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. It made me think of dreaming and slumber. The deep tuba tones represent snoring and heavy breathing. The vocals represent the whimsy and dreamy feeling we would get at night. The tinkles are meant to represent the stars that shimmer in the painting. This was an excellent activity to connect the two subjects and show representations through different modes. It was easy to get swept up and keep wanting to add more and more tracks.

My chosen amphibian is the Giant Burrowing frog.
As a class we would research the frogs distinguishing features and how we could portray them using our body and movements. We could possibly create a music track of slow and deep tones.
He makes for great inspiration as he is large, rotund and slow. Students could portray this with slow, low and heavy movements. They could make round shapes with their arms or clothing.
They have powerful muscular hind limbs that they use for burrowing, students could use pillows to make their legs look bigger.
Hand movements and facial expressions could portray the frogs big eyes.
These frogs get territorial during breeding seasons so we could tell they story of a frog trying to protect is area through the dance and what that might look like.

The teacher would narrate the story and different groups of students would take turns performing key scenes using only non-verbal methods. After each scene there will be class discussion on why they agree or disagree with the acting the group did.

This activity means that students have to engage in the content and communicate how they think the experience was, rather than just saying it. Develop their critical thinking skills, role play, movement and expressions.

Formative assessment could be observed in the group discussion and whether the students could justify why they agree or disagree or why the preforming students choose to communicate what they did.
