Appointment with Cg Renah, the HOD1 for class allocation. It's all set, I'll be teaching class 9AP1 for my research study until March, just before school holiday starts. I miss this school, although to be franked, I miss the all-boys school even more. However, seeing my previous students waving and calling me 'Miss Sha... Miss Sha' it brought up back those memories I've created with them. So I'll be here, and I'll be seeing you guys around. :)

Just had me wonder... where's that boy with good pick-up line words, and who's very enthusiastic about Malay literature?

SMMHT - Simple Past Tense

No. of students attended: 10/14
Time: 1-2pm
Venue: SMMHT ICT lab

Yesterday, they learned about action verbs delivered in simple past tense. First, they listened and read a story about a lazy boy from a story book titled 'The Old Woman & Her Lazy Boy'. Their task was to find as much action verbs used in the story book as possible, and asked to comment their responses on Padlet labelled no.2.

It was observed that they responded to question using present and continuous tense: sing, flying, etc. I've already mentioned that action verbs used must be in past tense as mentioned on the title: "2. List all verbs used in simple past tense." However, they understood what verbs were and were able to respond correct verbs - even if they were in present tense. Therefore, to ensure that they understood the word formation from present to past tense, teacher provided them with review questions. Example: what is the past tense of sing? All of them responded 'sang'. It showed that they have the fundamentals of form of verbs as their prior knowledge.

When they were asked to identify different tenses use in different context, the first part where "Fly a plane," said Mr. Flight, a student mentioned that Fly is used when we go on a vacation. Teacher had to rephrase the question to "Why do we use fly in this sentence, not past tense?" A student then commented, when speak - which was correct i.e. the dialogue or speech seen on the screen.

He flew a kite.
The same question asked by teacher, why this time they use flew and not fly. One student commented - when reply to people. So teacher had to find another text - the cat climbed on a tree yesterday. Another student raised up his hand and responded - when we describe animal. Again, teacher found another text - Musa gave his water to Aiman, circling cat, tree, Musa and Aiman. One student responded "when we describe a noun". Teacher in the end corrected "When we describe the action of a noun." It was seen that they could see a pattern formed using different tenses in different context, and they responded the didn't fly part correctly "use present tense".

Final task was to ask me questions using did, and respond using simple past tense or did not and then in present tense. Along the way, I had to make a few corrections for them. For example - Cg (Malay word for teacher), did you do to the bandar last monday? So this came for a classroom discussion and talked about what this person did wrong in his sentence (don't worry, it turned to be anonymous when they comment on it). During that time, I asked a few of them to try spotting the mistakes - capital letter, omission of word. After that, they followed the structure.

I could see a few correct questions formed from them when asking me questions using did. And they did not afraid to make mistakes, as they helped each other by spotting their mistakes verbally (no comments observed being written when their friends made mistakes in the sentence structure).

Overall, it was a successful lesson plan. Before the end of class, students can recall the different format of tenses used in different contexts, and forming questions did and did not because the class later (Wednesday) will be doing interview and their friends will need to respond to their friends' questions using complete sentences in simple past tense.

P/s: Problems came in when they tried to recall present tense (singular - he/she/it). That also will be polished soon.
