I came across an article which highlights the importance of recognizing the signs of child traumatic stress and understanding the impact that trauma may have on children. The article discusses an infographic created by SAMHSA’s National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative (NCSTI), which provides valuable information about the prevalence and impact of traumatic events on children. Additionally, the article offers suggestions on the actions that can be taken to support children who have experienced traumatic events.

Children who experience ongoing trauma, such as abuse, neglect, or violence, often face significant challenges in learning and behavior. This article highlights how trauma can manifest in the classroom, with symptoms like difficulty forming relationships, poor self-regulation, negative thinking, hypervigilance, and executive function deficits. Educators may misinterpret these signs, confusing them with disorders like ADHD. Dr. Nancy Rappaport and Dr. Jamie Howard emphasize the need for teachers to understand the emotional roots of students’ behavior, provide co-regulation support, and avoid punitive measures. Trauma-affected children require positive attention, incremental successes, and a supportive environment to counter negative self-perceptions and build trust in adults. Effective trauma-informed teaching involves recognizing emotions, helping students manage their responses, and fostering an atmosphere of kindness and patience. Aliyah Villegas

This article offers information about what childhood trauma may look like and gives a few warning signs of trauma in a young child—for example, having obsessions with the safety of themselves or family members, sudden problems with sleeping or eating, and prolonged grief. One thing I like about this article is it also gives triggers that may "set off" a response in the child, in the form of outbursts, isolation, or feelings of anxiety. Some triggers include the birthday of a deceased family member or friend, loud or familiar sounds, or certain people.
