(Trevor) So,.... 5G gets spread around the world, which is all good an well, but aren't we also burdening people with the expense to upgrade their devices to be compatible with 5G? Isn't this just perpetuating consumerism for 'bigger, faster, better, newer?'

My only question about 5G is what caused the negative perception around 5G? I know during the early parts of the pandemic, I read multiple stories about how 5G was causing the spread of COVID-19... Of course, this was not true, but I feel like since then, there's hesitancy around the adoption of 5G, which is so different from when 3G and 4G were introduced. I feel like no one questioned those, but many question 5G. So, my question is why?

My basic understanding of 5G is faster speeds and devices being able to connect to other devices easier. In terms of implications for learning and schools, many of the things involved in immersive technology and assistive technology are already possible with our current connectivity. Does the improved speeds and better connectivity justify the cost of installing 5G infrastructure for schools? - Jerry Chen

Similar to Trevor and Jerry's argument (and coming from a less advanced LTE user), it seems there is only a matter of time that a more complex model will be out and those who have invested in 5G will quickly need to reinvest their time, energy and money into new infrastructure. It's hard to keep up and quite frankly, seems wasteful (I'm thinking of how Apple always introduces a new charging adapter which forces customers to buy a newer model). I wonder if there is a way to level out the playing field between these developed countries that have the capacity to deploy 5G and those countries who are still on 2G. - Jocelyn

My immediate thoughts about 5G are the questions related to the security and safety of this technology. How secure are these networks when we look at potential safety threats as more and more companies are being targeted with cyber attacks (though you likely won't hear about them on the news). There was major pushback against the Canadian government wanting to allow Chinese company Huawei to build Canada's 5G infrastructure, arguing that it would allow a foreign entity to spy on Canadians. Also, is there any legitimacy to the concerns of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) related to 5G? (Liana)

How Important is 5G?

My biggest concern/question is just how important and impactful 5G is for our world. Cellular connectivity started out with large strides as we entered the 3G era. Lately, I have struggled to know just what causes the need for a "number change". I know that the USB standards have been horrendous with this as we moved from USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1, USB C, and so on. Even with Wi-Fi standards such as Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6, and Wi-Fi 6E. In essence, the way we use our devices do not change in a significant way. The USB port still can do the same things as it could before, just faster. For Wi-Fi, the speeds are simply increased. I just am always concerned if we are just being thrown into another marketing scheme to push the latest technology in the quickest way possible. I know the value that improved network connectivity could have and how important it is as we move towards using more connected devices, yet I feel like the technology loses its meaning as we create these revisions that leave older technology behind in such rapid fashion. - Joseph Villella

So, I am not a teacher in a school... I work in software and technology. This page was very enlightening to me. A concern/question I had, (that will likely be answered on another page of your wonderful OER) is 5G truly going to become a necessity for schools? Although I believe 5G to be an incredible privilege, I have trouble understanding if it will change the K-12 curriculum so completely. How will machines talking to machines change how students learn math, or science, or history? While technology will help industries, is it required in schools/education? Or is it a distraction from learning the theories and reasons behind the technology?
- Emma Pindera
