Socialism suggests that society should look after each other. Socialism is where there is public ownership rather than private ownership of the resources available. According to socialist views, people don’t live alone but instead, live together and in cooperation with one another.

The Inspector is using quite a moralising tone here and as he speaks his opinion becomes more clear. The use of the word ‘somebody’ shows that Inspector Goole is saying that someone has made her life a mess which shows that he is talking about responsibility and he is saying that it is somebody's or a group of peoples fault. Furthermore, he is showing that it was not an accident and he is wanting to put the blame on somebody. He is aiming to make them feel guilty as he said she had a ‘nice little promising life’ ahead of her but now she has no way of fulfilling it. The repetition of the adjective ‘little’ is used in a demoralizing and belittling tone as he is showing that he is not intimidated or threatened by Mr Birling. The phrase ‘I thought’ shows that the Inspector is hinting at the fact he knows more than he is suggesting. This provides juxtaposition with the life of Eva Smith and the life of the Birling’s as they had a life of wealth, big ambitions and expensive engagement rings, etc whereas Eva Smith was just an ordinary, working girl with dreams that were extinguished by people with power. This emphasizes how people in the position of power have trampled and ruined smaller peoples' lives.

The inspector intends to convey to Sheila that a ‘pretty’ woman like herself had died in agonising pain. Furthermore, we see that Sheila is already trying to put herself in Eva’s shoes and shows a sense of empathy and despair to what had happened. The repetition of the adjective ‘pretty’ reinforces the idea of that Sheila and Eva Smith are alike and shortens the gap between the upper class and the working class. This suggests that the inspector makes Sheila see the truth, which is that she isn’t much different to Eva Smith. Furthermore, he guides Sheila Birling into changing her views and beliefs and as a result she becomes more like him, more moral and empathetic despite difference in classes.

Additional - Sheila states, ‘But these girls aren't cheap labour - they’re people’ this indicates that the inspector had an effect on her as we see that she becomes more empathetic to the lives of their workers. Furthermore, the repetition of ‘pretty’ also acts as foreshadowing to how Eva Smith / Daisy Renton looks and appearance play an important role in the events which take place. Firstly, Eva loses her job because her appearance in a dress makes the egotistical Sheila jealous and spiteful, leading to her losing her job. Her looks also play another huge part in her story as both Gerald and Eric sexually exploit her because of her physical appearance. So, therefore, her attractiveness and ‘pretty’ looks was a curse to her.

The inspector’s function is to challenge the viewpoints of the Birling’s and forcefully teach them the message about collective responsibility. This is shown in the quotation “I’m not going until I know all that happened.” which showcases how the Inspector is determined to hold them accountable for their actions. The inspector’s demanding nature is also shown through the adverb and stage direction “Sternly” which presents his forceful attitude towards the Birling’s, making them feel powerless and more vulnerable to the reality of the situation rather than the family abusing their power to escape the situation. Moreover, the bluntness of the phrase “that dead girl” implies that the Inspector is not trying to sugar coat the situation or make it easier for the Birling’s to forgive themselves; he wants to put them through some degree of challenge and hardship because he believes that is the only way to push forward his message. Furthermore, it also conveys the finality and true consequence of the actions of the Birlings. It is a fact that will not become any less true after he makes the family come to terms with what they have done.

The inspector is also not at the Birling’s to extract information about the suicide “I’m not going until I know all that happened” because we know that his already knowledgeable about all their actions, which is shown through Sheila’s observation “(laughs rather hysterically) Why - you fool - he knows. Of course he knows. And I hate to think how much he knows that we don’t know yet. You’ll see. You’ll see.” Rather, the Inspector’s role is to place judgment on their actions and question their morals and lack of responsibility and, therefore, being the moral bedrock of the play.

‘And so you used the power you had, as a daughter of a good customer and also of a man well known in the town, to punish the girl just because she made you feel like that?’ (p.24)

Priestley uses the Inspector as a medium of eliciting guilt in Sheila Birling to make her feel more responsible for this unfortunate event. This is achieved through the tension and drama built using a rhetorical question to provoke Sheila’s true intentions. The attitude that the inspector addresses Sheila with in ‘And so you used the power you had’, irony is used to show his disgust, it conveys the ridiculousness behind Sheila’s decisions and further guilts and patronizes her.

Priestley also uses the Inspector as a way of showing the audience that young women in that time period were brought up to be egocentric, self-obsessed and vain. This quote proves that Sheila was brought up in this way as she is so off-put by someone looking better than her that she can’t help but make her feel even worse using the power of her father’s financial situation.

Sheila misuses her financial situation and her being the daughter of a wealthy customer in order to fire and satisfy her own need of being the best looking. This displays to the audience Sheila’s narcissistic nature, her problems and obsession with vanity is juxtaposed with that of Eva Smith where she has been driven to suicide. This ultimately shows the disjunction between the two social classes.

The inspector is mirroring the beliefs of not only Sheila but also the audience; by intruding on the audience’s thoughts by using direct address, ‘you’. This shows us the inspector's function is not only having a large impact on making the characters in the play feel responsible for their actions towards lower classes but also the audience’s potential classist beliefs. This reflects Priestley’s socialist and equal beliefs on society.
(Myra and Sadiyah)

‘(cutting in massively): You heard what I said before, Mr Croft. One line of inquiry at a time. Otherwise we’ll all be talking at once and won’t know where we are.’ (p.22)

The inspector function and role in this is to control and to inquire upon the death of Eva Smith. The fact that the inspector is said to be “cutting in massively” shows that he is treating the Birlings without respect and self proclaimed authority. This is further highlighted when he says “one line of inquiry at a time” which makes it sounds like he is talking to children or a classroom whereas he is actually talking to people with a high social status that would usually demand a high amount of respect. Furthermore the inspector is subjugating the Birlings as they have done before to people of lower classes. He is acting as the bigger person by taking the moral high ground. (Being the good guy)

Priestly again uses the inspector as an authoritative figure through the quotation “And so you used the power you had, as a daughter of a good customer and also of a man well known in the town, to punish the girl just because she made you feel like that?” The inspector is not showing respect to someone who is his social superior by accusing them of being responsible ‘‘to punish the girl just because she made you feel like that?” He is also chastising her and telling her off for her actions “the power you had, as a daughter of a good customer.. To punish the girl” This suggest that the inspector intends to make Shiela feel guilty and responsible for taking part in her suicide
