Hello, and welcome to the battlefield tour of the Battle of Shiloh! This battle had lasted only for two days but it was known to be one of the bloodiest wars. It took place in South Pittsburg, Tennessee on April 6, 1842 - April 7, 1842. This battle was led by Ulysses S. Grant and his army of Tennessee. More than 23,000 casualties took place in the battle as it was known for being the bloodiest battle in American history. Before this battle had begun, Albert Sidney Johnston brought his forces to Corinth, Tennessee to prepare for his operations that he planned against Grant. The Confederate retreat was met by Grant, which consisted of the Army of Tennessee. They had to get ready for their own defences, and Grant’s army camps were located at Pittsburg landing, where the soldiers had spent most of their time drilling recruits. This was one of the reasons why the Battle of Shiloh was also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing. Until his army had marched overland Nashville to meet him, General Buell told Grant not to engage with the Confederate Army. After the two fortify and reinforce, they go south to Corinth. Albert Johnston had anticipated a Federal move against Corinth, before Buell and his Union troops could arrive, Johnston and his 44,000 troop Army of Mississippi had planned to attack Grant's army who were at Pittsburg Landing. Johnston had stopped his army, but it was pouring rain which had detained his planned attack on April 3. Later on, on the fifth of April, he had located his army 4 miles from Pittsburg Landing. Then, in the woods, evening soldiers from both sides had exchanged gunfire. On the sixth of April, the Confederate infantry had come out of the woods and into the southern camps, startling the Union troops at Shiloh Church. The fighting then had begun at Peach Orchard, Water Oaks Pond, and around the Shiloh Church. Later that afternoon, Johnston had got shot right on his right knee, serving an artery causing him to bleed to his death. General Pierre G. T. Beauregard got the new job as Confederate commander, after Albert Johnston's death. Beauregard has no knowledge of Buell's arrival with reinforcements for Grant, as Beauregard calls a stop to the attacks. The Union army had almost fifty-four-thousand men located on Pittsburg Landing while Beauregard had around thirty thousand men in his army. As night fell, troops were pushed against the Tennessee River, but Grant refused to retreat. On the seventh of April, at 6:00 am Grant's attack begins and Beuregard calls for a counterattack. Beaurgard called for a 2nd counterattack as the confederated fell back and had to regroup. Later in time at about 3 o’clock pm, he came to the realization that there were lots of casualties and that he’s outnumbered, so in result he retreated back to Corinth, causing the victory of the Battle of Shiloh to go to the Union Army. As the battle had come to an end, on the eighth of April, Grant dispacted General Thomas John Wood and William Tecumseh Sherman to take note of the Confederates' positions. They came across rebel cavalry under the command of confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. General Forrest got shot by a Federal infantry at point blank range as he charged to the Federals. In which it caused the Confederate troops to escape as the Federal forces went in the direction of Pittsburg Landing. As many deaths occured throughout the battle, Albert Sidney Johnston’s death seemed to have a shattering impact. This would mostly have affected Jefferson Davis who held Johnston in immense personal and professional esteem. Davis quotted, “When Sidney Johnston fell, it was the turning point of our fate; for we had no other hand to take up his work in the West.” At the end of the month of May, Corinth had officially belonged to the Union. This battle holds its significance till this day as it emphasizes a major victory to the Union Army led by General Ulysses Grant, in which it had authorized him to start his operation in the Mississippi Valley later in the year.

This is an image of an artifact that was found during the Battle of Shiloh. This artifact was known as the cap box which belonged to Albert Johnston. The Confederate commander lost his life on the first day of the battle when a bullet grazed his leg, severing a major artery. Johnston bled to death under a tree that serves as a stop on the battlefield tour. This small cap pouch was Johnston’s and was carried by him when he was killed. Cap pouches served to hold the percussion caps needed to ignite the powder in a firearm.

A picture of Albert Sidney Johnston and a cap box belonged to Johnston.
